Well I decided to take the two boys 13 and 6 to Fairfield for some Red action. Never been on this lake, and really had no idea where to begin. We finally managed a couple, and ran across one of the best guys around. His name is Dwayne, and he gave me the helpful hints we needed to boat some nice reds. He even put my 6 year old on a nice 32" redfish. I was keeping a few for the boys to eat, and not only was he willing to lend me his electric knife, he cleaned my fish for me. What a guy. You just don't meet many people like that anymore. Hats off to ya, Dwayne. By the way, he just happens to be a TFF member. But you should have guessed that by his description.

I was out there today. I just cleaned my fish. Is it like a striper where you remove some of the dark red meat?

Curly Dog, I think I saw you. I was with my wife and 2 young children in a deep-V Tracker. My children would yell with excitement each time we had a fish on.

Woody,

Yeah I saw you. You launched ahead of me. We should have been where you were a little earlier. Glad to hear your kids had a great time. I know mine did.

Johnnlucky, just cut out the red meat like you do stripers. I think I saw you when you introduced yourself to Jackie. Glad you had some luck.

Heres a pic of my youngest...Thanks Dwayne

Curly Dawg, I've been wanting to get down to Fairfield, never been yet. Sure is a nice Red your son is holding. I know it must have really made his (and your) day. Those kinda days are just hard to beat. Good going !

Way to go Curly, that lake is something special and time spent with your boys is even better. I bet they will have a hard time going Crappie fishing now.

I was out on Fairfield for the first time on Sunday also. I really had no idea how to catch reds. I managed to catch two small ones in the reeds in front of the power plant, they were released. We did manage to net some tilapia. I think I saw you Curly Dawg, good looking family! I know I saw Jackie at the cleaning station with a mess of fish. I had that vintage 1950's red and cream vhull. I also got a nice souvenir from the Fairfield PD. A 155 dollar ticket for expired tags almost got another for forgetting to reconnect the trailer lights.

I would love to go back and give it another shot with my boys. Does anyone have any suggestions for catching reds? We were using shrimp and some small shad. The shrimp was on the bottom while the shad was under a cork about 5 feet down.

Thanks for any help,
Gober

I am definatly no expert, but park the boat close to shore, around lake points, and cast out as far as you can. I hear shrimp works well, but I netted talipia (about 3" length)hook them through the back, and fish them off the bottom with a heavy line leader. Morning bite seems really good.

Good luck, I may be back out there Saturday.

Whats the deal with all the talipia? I ran a siene net and caught maybe a hundred small ones in just two or three passes. I saw some where that TPW wanted them dead or you could be fined. We did net 8 big keepers that are in my freezer. I would love to get back out there but I have a 3 week old baby at home. Maybe if I take my 3 and 5 year old momma wouldn't mind too much.

Are the red fish active all year or only in the summer months?

Thanks,
Gober
