Over a year ago, I made the switch from lead weights to tungsten for my Texas rigs. I love the excellent feel the tungsten gives, but I have noticed an increase in the break-offs I have. I changed line (twice) thinking I had bad line. I changed line brand.... but I still notice more break-offs than I use to have. The only difference is the weight.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

use a plastic bead. if you use glass, the tungsten will chip it and cut your line. also, knots become very important if you are using flourocarbon

The line isn't breaking at the knot, but up a couple inches from it. This summer, I'm using flourescent line because I night fish a lot and use a black light. There is grass in my lake, but I don't think it is the culprit. The tungsten weights I use are the BPS with the plastic insert

If you have only changed line twice within the last year therein could be your problem. Heck, I change mine after each trip if it gets fished much at all. I fish some of those weights and have never had a problem breaking the line.

Are you pegging your weight? My partner found out the hard way that pegging is necessary, by cutting down on the abrasion caused by the weight sliding up and down the line!

I was warned about the BPS tungsten weights by a gentleman that fishes for a living because of this very same reason.

I change line every 3 - 4 weeks (or more often if necessary). I've tried pegging the BPS weights, but the plastic sleeve makes it all but impossible. I understand Tru-T weights don't have the insert and the hole is larger. I can't use braid because it is useless in a blacklight (except for one made by Stren for night fishing).

I was just curious if others that use tungsten have noticed an increase in line breakage

I switched to tungsten this year and have not noticed an increase in line breaks. I am using weights from bulktungsten.com.

not to knock bass pro shops but their tungsten weight is bad on flouro. I got rid of all of mine and use true tungsetn only. I promise thats why your having your problem. I can put a bps weight on 15lb segar flouro and in about 5 cast see where its damaging the line.

Go to the Tru Tungsten brand weights. No insert to dull the feel between the bottom and your rod tip AND they will never damage your line.

Either peg the line or make sure your brand of weights has a plastic sleeve. Even if it does have a sleeve and you're not pegging then use a bead (plastic, NOT glass)
