it's enough. I will sometimes only use 8lb and do fine.

I am currently using 10 lb. I haven't used anything over 12 lb in 10 or 12 years. I almost never break off. I get cut off by sharks and skip jacks. The lighter line cast better and doesn't seem to twist as bad. Pat

I've landed bull reds to 45 inches on 12lb. mono. It's enough. Just watch out for oyster reefs, bulk heads and other structure.

I think I might use 14-15#. Those teeth can be something else.

I use 20 pound test for a leader when fishing with bait, so far I have not had any problems in the last few days

I use heavy braid, but if you manage your drag well 12 lb test should be fine. Leaders are also a good idea.

I've caught many spec's using 8# line on an old open faced Mitchell in West Bay wade fishing with a Johnson Sprite spoon. My buddies changed to light line because I always caught more than them even though we were standing side by side. The size of line has a big impact on the movement of a lure in fresh or salt water. I was always taught to use the smallest line you can get away with, no matter what kind of fishing you're doing. 12# is fine unless you're fishing around docks or piers.
