I am taking a neighbor and his grandson fishing this saturday and was wondering if there has been any early morning surface action with either sandys or blacks. The grandson is trying to learn to fish but has had limited oppertunities and he needs a good chance to catch some numbers in open water.
Anyone have any suggestions? I havent been on the lake in months and I want very badly to give this boy a good start. We will be putting in a R.R. marina on the Sanger side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I fished the Sanger side last Friday and got LMB off tank dams and the shallow area that runs up the west side just past the Pond Creek area. I did not fish for Sandbass.

However I noticed that your profile says you are in Keller. Grapevine might be a closer alternative. If you fish early(5:30am-10am) you can avoid the pleasure boaters. Last Sunday my wife and I caught about 15 LMB fishing plastics & crankbaits and were off the water by 10. We did not fish for sandbass.

Haven't seen your posts in a while Fishinator. What part of GV were you on? East side or west side? Shallow or deep?

I fished Ray Bob yesterday, 8/7. I only caught three fish all day, but that's just me. I mostly fished the South end and west arm. Bad choice apparently. Caught the three fish by the tall bluff down by the dam. Carolina rigged Senkos, 20 ft. + of water. Tried Pecan Creek for grins, the old roadbed and such, no luck. The waves were pretty high up there yesterday. The water was murky. I also tried my old haunts around Wolf Island. Man, there was a time when every tree along the boat lane on the north side of Wolf held a bass. Not anymore. I downsized to a small worm and line also, still no takers. A lot of boats that seem to be fishing the same spots. If you think you found a good spot that should hold fish, and you end up not catching any fish on it, just look behind you at the other fishermen coming in to fish it. Heavy fishing pressure. Hey I have to have some excuse don't I? laugh laugh I can give you this advice: NEVER, EVER, decide to try to load up your boat between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Pond Creek Ramp. It was a virtual circus. I had to circle for at least 30 minutes to get a spot to tie up, and go get the trailer. People sitting on the ramp, loading up the tubes and skis, others working on motors, some seemed to just like the scenery and tied up there to eat dinner and have a smoke, etc. People trying to unload boats etc. Next time, I'll wait til dark or find another ramp.

Roadrunner and I were out yesterday, for us it was grass on the main lake or if in a creek around the mouth in the first cove. Grass was the key for us, we caught a total of 9 bass yesterday, but not a bite after about 11. It did seem like the wind and bit of cloud cover kept them on a shallow morning bite for a little longer than usual. Weightless Flukes in and on the grass and rattle traps around the grass got us bit.

Dube,

We were fishing the North side of Grapevine. Fished mostly shallow but with deepish(7'-10') water nearby. Caught them on Crankbaits & plastics. Did not seem to care what color as long as it was near some type of flooded brush. We went again this morning and had similar luck but it was much harder to fish with the wind.

Jimin8r, Hey, I didn't do that bad then! If the two of you caught 9, that's 4.5 fish each. And I know you and Roadrunner know the lake. I am in third place then. Best place for me all year. smile By the way, your life jacket is still hanging up in the garage, although it is getting a litle dusty.

well it was a good day all together. We started on some main lake points with pop-Rs and caught about ten or so up to three lbs. I caught the biggest one on a spook that went a little over 5 lbs. The action died down pretty fast out in the open and my instinct was to get in the deeper wooded creek edges but with two inexperienced guests in the boat, I opted for open water trolling for sand bass and its was great. We drove around until we found some schooling sandies. They were up and then right back down faster than you could blink so we would troll through the same ares in about 10 to 15 ft. and were catching three at a time. When it slowed downd a little, we would turn and make another pass. We did this for the rest of the afternoon with about 60 fish total by 1:30 pm.
It was great to see that young mans face light up when he hooked up on a sandy. It was so funny watching him reel fish after fish in with comments like " he's huge" or " this is the biggest one today" and " oh man! he's pulling good!" of course they were all only about 10 to 13 inches.LOL
