Over the last 5 years or so i've found myself fishing a Ribbit or toad almost exclusivly over a buzzbait. I like the fact that i can fish it in thicker cover without getting hung up yet it still draws fish in open water. Are there situations where a buzzbait clearly outshines a toad or ribit?

Frogs get the nod from me in heavy weeds. They can be worked slower(and stopped) over holes in the grass and they are more weedless in the thick stuff. They also stay in the "strike zone" longest. But when the fish are hitting out from the grass or in open water with just maybe some timber I have much more confidence in a buzzbait to draw the most strikes. Seems to get more "open water reaction strikes" for me. Buzzbaits cover alot of water quick also. No hard rules here as each has its place and sometimes the exact opposite of what I just said is what the fish want. Just a general rule for me. 361V

or what about Jigs with trailers in those weeds and grass---i dont know but I would go with a jig-with craw trailer anytime over a frog. I only get that from reading the forums alot though.

Jigs in weeds and grass is like nothing other----

Over grass use the frogs.
Open water, around rocks, boatdocks, open stumps stick with the Buzzbait. You will get a better hookup rate with a Buzzbait and a Trailer hook. Also, if you bend the blade slightly to "tap" the wire frame you get additional noise. Also the blade color can make a difference with light reflection or flash. They really are not the same baits. They can function the same but the action/sound/skirts/legs flopping are all special to different situations and times to make fish hit them.
Example: You can speed fish a worm or swimbait on the surface but it's just "different".

I have tons of ribbits and 2 buzzbaits. The only reason I have 2 buzzbait is becouse my partner dorgot them in the boat. I fish the thickest nastiest stuff with a ribbit. JMO

i like to locate fish with a buzzbait, because you can fish it faster. if im fishing lakes without much grass i'll usually only throw the buzz.

Wind is the key for me.. Seems like Buzzbaits are better when there is a chop on the water... Frogs better when it is slicker..

I have a better hookup ratio on the buzzbait but love to throw the horny toad alot when everybody else is throwing the buzzbait.I am going to try the Hack frog hooks from tru-tungsten on the frogs next time to try to improve hook up ratio.

I also throw my frogs on heavy braid, no more hook up problems just make sure you use a rod with some tip action or you might rip it out when you set the hook, I use 50 lbs braid

Strike King Rage Tail Shads work real well, and with fall coming, look for them to work well with the bass busting shad
