Has anyone here done this? Should I hire a plumber or is this a DIY job?

It's DIY. I've done literally hundreds. Very simple.

If it's brand new there should be some step by step instructions. If not it's still rilly simple. If you need some help I'll pm you my phone number.

I did so many during my time in apartment maintenance. It's easy.

Whats wrong with it. I had mine stop turning when you turned it on. Put an allen wrench type tool in the bottom of it and turned it a few times and now it works fine. I think it had something hard stuck in it and it would not dislodge it on its own. Alot cheaper than buying a new. If this is the problem.

you can also use a broom handle and make it turn

Most have a breaker on the bottom of the unit, in case it gets too hot and you can reset it and make it work if it acts dead

You can DIY just make sure the power is off if you go to change it out.

It's dead. It's been threatening to give up the ghost for a while. It won't do anything. No hum from the motor but the wall socket has normal current. You can't turn the grinder blades with the allen wrench. I guess it ate something that didn't agree with it and burned out the motor. It's almost ten years old.

Upgrade to the bigger style (more horespower) disposal it will work better.

They are pretty easy to install, if not I bet Lowes/Home Depot probably charges around 100 bucks to install if you don't want to mess with it

Good call Ranger. One theory is that the small ones work just as well, you just can't stuff as much into them. Another theory is that you can't stuff enough into the bigger ones to stop them. My theory is that if the price isn't that much different you should go with the bigger one.

If your dishwasher drains into your garbage disposal, don't forget to knock out the plug when you put in a new disposal. There is a plug in an adapter on the side of the disposal to hook up the drain for the dishwasher. If you have a dishwasher and it drains through your disposal, you must knock that plug out for the dishwasher to be able to drain.

Been there, Done that. DUH!
