I've never had a problem with my trolling motor, foot controled front mounted. That is until yesterday, got to my spot stopped the motor and put it out, it started to go then it just died, almost like a short or something. I made sure the connections were good, even hooked it up to the cranking battery, no luck. The fuse looke good. It plugs into the front of the boat so I can't bypass the wiring in the boat to the battery to see if it is the wiring or the foot control mechanism.
Any thoughts of the best way to trouble shoot?

Closely inspect all of the connections in the foot control pedal. The connections on mine would come completely lose, or just barely lose. If they just come barely lose you will see a decrease in power. If they come completely off.....well, you know.
I would check those connections first and foremost.

Mine did the same thing about a month ago. It was the switch on the foot pedal. Turn the foot pedal upside down and there should be a switch that kicks it on and off when you push the pedal. A new switch was $9 and easy to install. If you have a test light you should be able to tell where the power loss is.

Same thing happened to mine during the BFC crappie tourney on Lavon Saturday morning...it ran good when I approached the first spot. After that I couldn't even get it to squeak...that's what I suspected it was on mine...the switch underneath is bad. I'm going to buy 2 and keep one in the boat for emergency's.

WillieFindum here, Call All Star Electronics (214-320-1673). They work on TM's and depth finders and have parts. They are located in Dallas on Dilido Rd. which is near Buckner (Loop 12) and I-30E. May be closer than BPS unless you just got to go there.

Also, if your TM plug is a twist lock, take it apart and make sure the overloads inside the plug aren't blown. This happened to me and now I carry an extra plug in the boat. Cheap insurance.

unfortunately the boat is out at the lake house so I need to take all the input and try them all when I get back out there, hopefully I can get it working. If its not one thing its another I guess, the motor is running like a dream...

Yep thats how I found mine. I put the tester on it at the ramp and zilch. I took the plug apart and it was fried inside.

Dlatin -
I found my troll motor problem and fixed it until the next time.
Did you resolve yours?
Seems there was a malfunction of the corpus callosum due to a couple of things, either a reduced Theta wave or reduced Beta wave that allowed the right hemisphere to by-pass the on-off-momemtary switch on the side of the foot control....

dlatin That's just a long-winded way to say I forgot all about the Continuous-Off-Momentary switch on the side of my foot control pedal. I had accidentally hit it into the Off position. Discovered that switch again when I was flopping the foot pedal around and it went into Continuous, chipping paint off the front deck like a handyman...I HATE rocker switches!!!! Many times when I get home from the lake I have to check the rocker switch on the front console that it's not on or it will run my cranking battery down. I always seem to trip it no matter how hard I try to stay away from it when I climb out over the front to winch the boat onto the trailer. I absolutely, without a doubt HATE rocker switches!
