Do any of you catch many sandbass while crappie fishing. I fish Grapevine, Lewisville, Richland Chambers, Joe Pool and I always catch way too many sandbass for my liking. Is it just me? Are all North Texas lakes full of sandbass? I grew up in East Texas fishing Martin Creek, Murvaul, Tyler and can not remember catching a sandbass.

I fish Belton quite a bit & certain times of the year I catch quite a few sandis while crappie fishing. Most of them are caught when fishing minnow or shad, but when they are running good I catch a lot on jigs too. Normally I'll keep any over 12 inches since they make better fillets. In my opinion they fry up just a couple of notches below a good crappie fillet. Also they make good 'give-aways' when people are bugging you for free fish.

I agree with you Thumpmeister, they make good give-aways. Bake it whole (the larger ones), take it to a party and see it disappear in no time at all. Brought 5 baked sandies to a BBQ last weekend, my friends gathered around it like fish hawks..

I caught 5 big sandbass today while crappie fishing. It sure gets you excited when that happens. The first one I thought I had that 3# crappie.

Are you doing alot of casting and retrieving or trolling?it seems to me that most of the sandys I catch are when I am reeling the lure up to recast, this is what you would do if you were trying to catch them,I have set right in the middle of a school and caught crappie for an hour and never caught a sandy because I was slowly lowering the jig to the bottom and not reeling in until a crappie was on.

Lately, I have been catching the Whites on a slow retrieve. Deeper waters, aroung 40- 45ft. Using Jigs, since I was fishing crappie and the whites where hitting the Jigs too. Drop it to the bottom and reel in as slow as you can, normally they would hit it as it came off the bottom. Worked the last 2 weeks, and I was fishing at night.

I was having same trouble, but I'm far from expert. I just adjusted. I was catching sandies at 12 eyes down. I figured that the crappie must be above them. I started 9 to 10 eyes down & started hitting crappie. Just figured the whites where taking crappie scraps. At least it worked. Joe Pool - night with lights & minnows.

I'm no expert either but it seems to happen when I fish minnows and jigs. I will try and change depth next trip.
