The other day i was out at the lake with my dad and i thought of something that i thought would be useful. I was thinking that it would be useful if they made a fishing line that had some kind of little blue marking every 2 feet or so, that way if you are fishing vertically for crappie or stripers, it would be easier to get the bait to the desired depth. I usually just try and strip line off in increments of two feet to get to a certain depth, but i think that is really innacturate and it seems as if it would be easier if, say every two feet the line changed from clear to blue for about an inch, that way you could just count line color changes and get really close to your desired depth every time with little work. Any one else think this would be useful? Any one else ever come up with inventions?

I know they make a line that's a different color every 10ft or so. mostly used by the offshore deep water jiggers. Very popular in the Far East and Japan. Not sure if they make them in lighter versions. They also make reels with line counters on them. If you see a Japanese Daiwa or Shimano catalog, more than 1/3 of all the baitcast reel models they produce have digital line counters on them. Go figure!

I personally use the black sharpie method. Since my crappie at usually no deeper than 30ft so I only need 2 marks. laugh

Zebco has or is coming out with a spincast and a spinning reel where you can click a button at any depth and it will automatically stop the spool once it reaches that depth. Thought that was pretty cool, you don't have to watch for a mark or anything, just automatically return to the depth you caught your last fish.

You can also jig with a longer rod...say 10' - 12'. Then, you can tell exactly how deep you are before the jig gets in the water. I just bring the jig down to the bottom of the rod...so I know that the jig will fall 12' (If I am using a 12' rod).
Then, measure the distance from the reel to the first eye of the rod. You can then pull off line from the reel to the first eye, and you will always know exactly how deep you are fishing.

Use your rod. Then pull the line out. Then you know you are 2,3 or 4 pulls. You can raise or lower your rod several feet. Quick and easy.

I've used a thread type bobber stop in the past.
Get your desired depth and slide it up to the reel. Completely adjustable depth marker.

I rarely find all the fish at the same depth,
even on the same structure. Similar depth but
not the same. I use the long rod method and
fish down by 18 inch intervals. I have caught
fish at 12 and 20 feet on the same bridge piling
or tree. More often they are within a 4 ft
span, say 12 to 16. I think you would miss
a lot of fish if you don't fish a good range
of depth. Just a thought from a hybrid fisherman
that likes to eat crappie. smile
good luck

You people are making me feel old. I remember when almost all braided line was marked in color about every 6 inches.

Zebco makes a reel with a depth set switch on it.

Zebco 20/20, Crappie finder, 3 to 1 gear ratio, Line Cap 80 yards of 8 pounds.

I have used one for years with no major problems, find the depth set the switch and reel up, cast out and it returns to the set depth every time. I have also used a bait casting reel with a flipping switch and it work well also.

If the LORD takes me to it, He will see me through it.

Bassfish, I've been looking for some of those Zebcos but was told they were discontuned. The web site for Zebco does not show them available.
You wanna sell yours? lol
