Hello all...I just posted a response to rookie61 regarding G-vine crappie fishing and want to confirm or deny something. Here's a story/question for ya...I went Monday to Marshall Creek and fished several areas that are known crappie holes on Marshall Creek (before and past 377 bridge). Needless to say...got skunked. Used jigs/minnows and kitchen sink...no results.
Now I consider myself an competent fisherman (debatable) so I left scratching my head. We did notice lots and lots of inch worms/catepillars dropping on the water from the trees above. My graph was painting fish aplenty (sandies?) and surface action by fish was incredible. Question: During heavy insect blooms does it become harder to catch crappie? I'll read all your posts and thanks in advance for your information.

Match the hatch !!
I have seen times during a mayfly hatch, a pale yellow jig will catch fish, while all other colors are ignored.
I suspect if you had thrown a jig the size
and color of the bugs, you would have
caught fish.
good luck

Sounds like we may have some soon to be fly fishing converts here. I'm sure that the insects could affect the crappie but, during the spawn they are so active I doubt they would have a great impact on the bite. I caught a limit on Belton last tues. and there were catapillars everywhere. Who knows, crappie are so sketchy. I don't think anyone knows for sure what the hell turns them on and off sometimes. Kind of keeps things interesting.

I think when the crappie are tending the nesting
sites, they will often hit just about anything you
throw in thier area. The trick is to get close enough to the nest. The males I caught last Monday evening were hitting both jigs and minnows, drifted slowly over the shallow beds. I would say try to cover as much shallow water as
you can, and try to emulate the same color and size as those catapillars.
Most of all be very patient because they are
bitting slowwww! The fishing should only get better over the next two months as the spawn heats up along with the water temps!
FWIW Lucky13!
