Bluegills and sunfish are great eating, better than large mouth, white bass, or stripers. I go fishing to eat fish, not to be a big shot. My neighbor in Mississippi shared his pond with me. There bluegill fishing with grandkids was great fun, and we ate them right up. I have hybred striper fillets in the freezer. I looked at one yesterday and chose crappie fillets instead. If I can't eat it, I will turn it loose from now on. Problem in Texas is theat bluegills are too small to eat. I live in Waxahachie. When can I find larger bluegills? I especially need to find bluegills near Austin where my grand children live. Thanks for any tips. Eldon

I have never tried fishing for bluegill , crappie or any other type of fish like that, I have a nice ultra light setup I would love to try on these fish but don,t know even the basics for fishing this type, any suggestions would be great, I don,t have a boat so I am limited to what I can do.

Stephen,
You should join me on Lake Fork. I caught about 15 bluegill yesterday just sitting on the boathouse, for a couple of hours. One of them was a really good size. This time of year they are all around the boathouse.

Eldon, There are nice sized sunfish in Lake Austin and in Lady Bird Lake. I don't know any particular hot spots, but have seen some good reports here. Good luck!

Lake Fairfield in Fairfield State Park has huge dinner plate sized bluegill. Yes, you are right about the BG's in FF. But you have to realize that they are all reserved for the 4th Annual BreamBuster's Fish-Fry next year. You can fish for them but you have to C-A-R so that there will be plenty for the skillet. BTW: It's an OPEN event so you are welcome to attend!

Yes Now that I've been fishing for 35 years and caught them all. Pound for pound, "nothing" beats a bream. What a great way to spend a day. Panfishing is the best.

I remember the first really big really brim I ever caught. It was 11 inches and weighed right at a pound. I considered it a trophy fish. One of my favorite type of fishing is ultra-lite spin fishing for bluegill and redear. And are dbags even used anymore?
