With the crappie moving up for the spawn in the next month or so, how do you "experts" cork fish with jigs?

What I'm wanting to know is what kind of bobber (weighted or not), how many jigs, and type of retrieve. Thanks for any help, folks.

Unweighted slip cork, one or two jigs will work but I prefer one. Be sure to use a jig heavy enough to make the cork stand up straight. Cigar shape, round, pear shape, doesn't matter.

WRJ,

They're moving up, now?? Hmmmm. All the reports still show they're in 15'+ of water, and 20-35' in more open waters.

Earnest,

Thanks. I think I remember you showing that pic. It was long ago when I saw it though and forgot what thread you mentioned it in. Thanks for repeating your advice. I have all that you mentioned and will try here when the spawn starts. Gracias.

Ernest, what circumstances determine whether you use a cork or not when you fish with a jig?

That's easy. If the water is shallow (3' deep or less) like in a creek I will try a cork & jig.

But, never get locked in on one thing. Try different techniques until something works.

ok Ernest, do you "pop" the cork, just swim it back, lightly jig thru the slip bobber?

(by the way congrats on your soon to be 3000 post)

They are definitely in the creeks already . I caught 50+ yesterday in a creek that is no more than 8ft deep on average . I started out with 3 dozen minnows and had run out in a couple of hours . Although I'm not an experienced jig fisherman , I had no choice but to start using them . I used black/yellow , blue/pink , green/yellow , and solid white and caught crappie on everything I tried . The only reason I quit was I was running out of daylight and the jon boat I paddled up this creek didn't have lights . I was using the exact same slip-bobber setup I use with minnows , one of the best days fishing I've had in a while wink .

I too have been hammering the crappie the last couple weekends on hair jig and bobber in shallow creeks. Check out my Granbury is hot!! post for picks on 20 12"-14" crappie out of 75 caught last Sat. Never thought the crappie would be up that shallow this time of year but I finally checked it out and its amazing the quality and numbers in there.

These stories would be more convincing with date-revealing photographic evidence. The fact that the creeks name was not disclosed is also telling.

Gee you caught us Calico.
All the Crappie fishermen in North Texas had a meeting and decided to con you into thinking you could catch Crappie in Jan. in a 2' deep Creek.
Didn't work though, you're too sharp for us so stay home, don't even think of trying it because it's just a "conspiracy". laugh laugh

A photo can have any date that I want to put on it.

The last time I named a creek I was going to there were 39 TFF members there waiting for me when I got there so we just had a seminar on the spot.

And, yes it was winter and we all caught fish. banana

I guess living on the left coast has made you cynical. I've caught calico bass too but I didn't stay long enough to become left coast-ish.

Look at any of the posts about WRC White Rock Creek. I've posted photo's there and so have others.

If you want to learn, try researching this forum, you'll see.

Many others including me have been catching crappie in the creeks since December. I caught crappie today in 15 - 20 feet of water on Lake Lewisville. I could have gone to a creek that flows into a lake and caught them in 3 feet of water today as well.

Try fishing and you'll see.

I use a plastic pear shape with clips. I let it lay down and let the fish set it up. I love it and have good luck with it.
