Had a guide trip yesterday morning, fished nothing but cedar trees in 15' of water or less and most of the fish were caught 5-10' deep on jigs. We had 40 keepers, several nice fish up to about a 1 3/4 lbs and about half were black crappie. There were lots of shad in the back of the cove where we were fishing flipping on top of the water. I think the cloud cover moved the fish up. Some fish would hit it when you couldn't see your jig anymore. If anyone is in the area looking for one of the proangler poles and buck creek store is closed, give me a call at 972-816-2481. I'm about 10 minutes from the lake or around the lake most of the time and I keep a good supply with me at all times.

Sounds like you guys had an excellemt morning.

I was headed that way Sat. then changed my mind at the last minute - took the boys to LL. We did o.k. on the crappie and outstanding on the sandbass.

Leave me a few - hope to get back up there soon.

Looks like I'm fishing the wrong trees again.....

Paul what made you switched from the deep hardwoods to the shallower cedar trees? No bites? or just a lot of short fish? We had bites in deep water but they weren't the keepers that we have been catching. Mostly short fish.

Experienced the same shallower water bite this morning on Lavon. Also, lots of shad flipping the top of the water along the shorelines (shallow).

Nice report, Paul. See you guys next Saturday at Lavon.

Jason, If I had to guess it would be the cover that cedars provide. I cant count the numbers of LMB that I used to catch in the dead of summer that were 5 to 6 foot down in a cedar tree that was in 30' of water. Either that or it may just be the presence of the baitfish. I know you will get a better answer from a guide but thats just my .02

Thanks JJ.....I agree ....but most of what I've been seeing here and experiencing myself are catching fish in trees 20-35 foot..about 15 foot down.......not the trees he described above in 15' or less water..I was just curious why he went to shallower trees initially.

Paul:

Chuck and I were out there on Sat and didn't see you? We were in Chuck's boat so you probably didn't notice us like if we were in my Lund. Interesting that you caught them shallower. We caught most of our in Cedars as well....but more like 22' deep.

I am going to want a couple of your new rods and I think Tom L. wants one as well. Why don't I meet you up at RR some day after work and we can fish a couple hours and I can buy the rods? If that doesn't work, tell me when you will be out there on your next guide trip and I will find you on the lake.

Dave

Dave,

I've got the boat show next weekend then it's off to Rockport the next weekend. After that we need to get Tom over and we'll all go hit RR. He said he got to fish with Lindner while he was back home in Minnesota. Said they had some bad weather but I bet he and Al got into some fish anyway laugh

The reason I fished the cedar trees that day is because I had taken this gentleman twice before to two different spots and I wanted to show him how to fish cedar trees. He wants to learn a lot more about the lake and he had never fished cedar trees so I took him to a place that Jerry and I fished last July 4th weekend and fished shallow water. I think the reason the fish are there is that this cove has a lot of deep water and the sand bass have pushed the shad in to the back of the cove schooling. When I cleaned the fish most all of the fish had shad in them. I even had shad in the live well that they had spit them out. We fished with the proangler rods and the guy that I was fishing with couldn't believe how durable they were hitting them up against the cedar limbs. Master Dave I'm on vacation all next week and will be over at the lake a lot. Give me a call and we will hook up and go fishing. I hope this will help answer your questions about why the fish were there.

Paul - I am on vacation on Friday 7/29 if you didn't have a guide trip all or some of that day and wanted to fish. We can do a rod transaction that day as well. I will find out what Tom L. needs.
