I fished Conroe for a few hours this afternoon with poor results. Fished around the Walden marina, then the 1097 bridge and the railroad tracks north of 1097 and all I could find were those dang yellow bass. I didn't fish anything shallower than about 20 feet and I suspect the crappie have moved into shallow water. Can anyone confirm my shallow water theory? I'm thinking of going up to the Stubblefield area to try next weekend. Is anyone catching anything?

I did not fish this past weekend but, I did fish last Monday.

1 crappie is all that we caught in the places we had been catching fish just the week before.

My fishing partner and I came to the same conclusion that you have come to, they have moved on to the pre -spawn locations in full force. I bet they are hanging around the calvary road bridge right in front of Stow-A-Way marina getting ready to head back in to lake Paula, up near the 1097 bridge at the tip top of Walden Cove, Stubblefield, etc.

I would check the area that Bozo is talking about before heading up to Stubblefield. Good Luck!!

Hey Bozo,

What do you call Walden cove? Is that the cove north or south of Walden?

I live on the south side of Walden. Have you had any luck fishing the lower part of the lake.

When I say Walden cove, I am referring to the Little Lake Creek finger of the lake.

As far as fishing the lower end of the lake, yes, I have had success. There is just too many big boats bouncing waves off the bulkheads for me to enjoy it. There are fish in all parts of the lake.

Bozo,
Have you ever fished the rip rap at 1097 or 1375 with any success during the spring? I have read how good rip rap can be during the spring.

I just don't want to stop there and waste time if they are further north. I know that the cove by stow away marina is supposed to be awesome during the spring.

Thanks for any info.

Honestly, no I haven't. That doesn't mean that there aren't there. I have a couple of honey holes that i fish in the spring and just stick with those.

The areas you mention should be good. If you stop at a place and don't catch fish, you are not wasting your time. You are learning where they aren't at that time.

Sometimes, I have to figure out where they aren't 5 or 6 times before I figure out where they are. And then there are those times when I spend all day learning where they aren't. Keep stopping and checking places that seem logical to fish and sooner or later, you'll have one of those days where it seems like the fish want to jump in the boat.

Thanks for the reply Bozo, I appreciate it. I guess I have to agree with you, it is not wasting time. A bad day fishing is always better then working. Plus like you said it was a learning experience.

You fellows are correct about some shallow fish. I have a friend that lives in New Waverly. He has been fishing way up north (not quite to Stubblefield) and catching alot of good crappie in 2-4 feet of water for the past three weeks. If I was you I would move to the shallows.

Good Luck!

I am assuming with this cold front that came through that the fish will move deep again until we have warm weather again

I know the crappie have move to the pre spawning areas. We have been catching them in about 6 to 9 feet of water in the marina. I have not pulled any of them off the bulk heads. I would try Scott ridge's when you get there look over on your right hand side(1097 side). There is a little cove we kill them last year there with minnows.
and look out for bass spawning way in the back area.
good luck and tell how you did.

Anyone do any good at Conroe this weekend? I went on Sunday with my brother. We fished the bridge for a while. Then we went up by Scott's ridge boat launch along Caney Creek, fished some coves along with the bridge rip rap. Only caught one. We used minnows & jigs?

We did catch a nice size white bass along with a yellow bass and the loner crappie. It made a good lunch on Sunday when I got home.

I would like to hear how anyone else did.

I didn't get the boat out, but there were sure lots of fisherman this weekend. There was a bass tourney at April Plaza marina as well as lots of crappie fisherman I noticed. I haven't heard of anyone doing real well though.

It sounds like you guys spent your time "finding where they are not." Well, at least you were on the water. How deep of water were you fishing?
