Lake Bob Sandlin Report 08/01/09

Lake is currently full and has been rising due to recent rains. Water temps have been in the upper 70’s to low 80’s and the water clarity is slightly stained from the 21 bridge to the dam. Grass is very healthy through out the lake and there is still plenty of button willows and brush along shoreline areas all over the lake.

The fishing the past month has been pretty mixed up due to all the rain and cool temps. The thermacline has been fluctuating from 30 feet up to 21 feet and the deep fish bite has been a day by day pattern . Over the past few weeks the more consistent bite has been the shallow bite with fish up to 6 lbs being caught. Best areas are secondary points and flats with creeks or ditches adjacent. Once the temps start to warm back up look for the deep bite to get consistent again. Target fish on road beds, ridges and points with carolina rigs and drop shots on top of or at the break on the structure.

Currently best baits have been a wide variety of top water presentations with frog baits being at the top of the list. Weightless plastics around the grass edges and around willows. My presentation of choice after the top water bite in the morning has been either wacky worming or using the circus rig. But with the return of sunny weather and rise in temps flipping docks for shallow bites should be getting better as well. The outside grass edges will also be heating up, position your boat in 7 to 12 feet and throw parallel to the grass. Sometimes they will whack the lure in the grass but usually the bite will come at the fringe. Texas rigged creature baits in just about any shade of green will usually get you bit. I also have had luck stroking jigs with the Poorman’s jig in Texas smoke color. Carolina rigs and drop shoting Grande Bass Rattlesnakes are also good techniques in the same areas.

Here's a pig on a recent trip!

This lake can be frustrating with solid keeper fish being hard to find for most, so if any one is interested in booking a trip I still have openings for August(day or night)just give a holler.

Thanks and be safe!
