Is there anything that can be done to reduce the amount of slime on crappie after they've been in the cooler? Sometimes it is gooked all over them so bad it's disgusting.

Yes,
Keep an excellent icechest on your boat. Try to keep the top shut as much as possible. The slime comes from meting ice. Also, if you can, use block ice vs. normal.

1. Keep the water drained out of the cooler, and the fish covered in ice. 2. Keep them in the livewell, with the water circulating...and add about 1/2 bag of ice every 30-45 minutes. You can keep crappie alive in the livewell this time of year this way

I don't mind a little fish slime, but last time I got home there was so much slime on my fish that they almost looked yellow. Not only that but I don't have running water where I have to clean my fish so having that junk in my livewell and ice chest can really cause a stink. Literally.
Thanks for all the tips, I will give them a shot.

Never really thought much about it. In Missouri I never had to put them on ice as the water didn't get so warm. Since I have been in Texas I just drop a bag of ice, unopened, in the cooler along with some frozen Powerade bottles (full of water, not Powerade). No water at all. I never seem to have that much slime and the fish stay cold.
I would guess that works the same as the posts above about keeping the water out of the cooler.

Rub it all over you. Won't do much for your love life, but the fish will practically jump in your boat .

We freeze a lot of plastic bottles filled with water and they last longer and don't add any water to the box. We use different size bottles and can add the smaller ones to the minnows if needed. When I get in and if I am not going to clean them until the next day I also add ice when we get back to cover the top.
