Most of the time we hook all our fish in the front/top of the mouth or side of the jaw. When fish are aggressively feeding they often hit the bait on the fall and if you don't see the line jump they can swallow the bait. This can be a problem when the boat is rocking due to heavy winds and wave action. Every tournament fisherman knows fish conservation is key to our sport and most do all we can to limit fish mortality. Sharpening your fishing skills with time on the water will limit deep hooked fish... but it will still happen occasionally.

Rapala sells a very good hook out tool with a long shank that will reach well down into deeply hooked fish's mouth.

Thanks for the tip on the Rapala tool. I'll have to check that out ASAP. I've been using needle nose pliers which work appropriately well, but are occassionally a bit slow and awkward with some deep hook sets.

Is it better on deep hooked fish to just to cut the line and leave the hook in the fish? I've heard this is the thing to do and the hook will rust out or rot and the fish will be fine.

It depends on location.. a Hook that obstructs the fish's gullet opening is not going to help it eat. Think of having a tooth pick stuck in your throat and trying to swallow a meal. The hook point is still free to do more damage if left in place.

You just need to take extra care when removing them to minimize the damage.. A long shank hook out tool will make it a lot easier than plain needle nose pliers.

Gamakatsu EWG lite wires and Gamakatsu WG Off set. Red. I like the lighter wire for more action.

I use Gamakatsu everything and really like the EWG's....BUT, have recently found the Academy brand to be very sharp and fairly sturdy, somewhere between a regular EWG and Superline hook. I'm still new to the Academy brand, but think they are GREAT for fun fishing
