Hey guys, I need some tips.
My nephew is headed down from D.C., he is 12, and my dad wants me to take them catfishing on Calaveras. I always catch 10-20 cats in the cove where the rail road goes into the plant. I fish the banks on the left side (facing the railroad) with worms and bobbers at about 2 - 4 foot depth.
The presure is on since he is a yankee and he only has one day to catch so if my spot/style does not produce is there any other good spots?
I fished there in July until about 1PM when it got to damn hot and we did well, but I kept thinking a little deeper would do better.
My average catch is 15inch, plenty good to eat, but I would love to catch some a little bigger for his sake to get a good fight.
Also, I have used shrimp, liver, and danny kings in the same area with little results. Do those baits produce better bites with the big guys in other areas?
Thanks for your advice and help!

I'm no expert, but I've been finding them shallow as well. You can find them by the reed beds often. I have my best luck on Big Marv's punch bait followed by Danny Kings. My buddy likes using worms, and he does catch them, but not as many. Good luck and have fun.

Think shallow not deep. Current past points.Set cork 2 ft deep. Use shad. Hire Cliff. These are all good points to consider.

I always catch the bigger cats, 3 to 4 pounds using fresh cut shad.
Not that you can't catch bigger cats on anything else including punch bait, because I caught a 25# blue about a month ago on Big Marv's, but as a rule you catch bigger cats on shad, at least it works that way for me!
I second hiring Cliff, as it would be money well spent!

+10 on the Big Marv's & cut or whole shad. Don't forget about 181 cove. If they are pumping water anchor up just outside the mouth of the area they are pumping out of and you should do well. If you go past the crappie wall and fish the back side nearest to the power plant. Set out a couple of 3-4" perch or Talapia on some good size rods on a Carolina rig. You just might pick up a couple of BIG reds when they pass thru there. That would put some fight up for your Yankee kinfolk Good luck & Tight lines!!! Rob

Or you could hire "Fishing with Manny" and go rip the lips off of some Reds in a hurry. http://www.fishingwithmanny.com/Rob

He'll put you on fish with a decent price and you will have a LOT of fun doing it! If you can swing it, it him up now. Steven

Thanks guys!
I met Manny's son at Best Buy a few months back and he talked really hi about his dad's Red service. I might look him up soon!
As for a cat guide, I would love to on Choke, but not Calaveras. I know the cats are there, I usually find them, I was really just wanting a secondary tip if my place that I disclosed did not work out. I assume it will, it always has.
Tight Lines!
