I would say that something in the 100lb class and probably green. Power Pro is what I use.

Land pirate, I see you do a lot of posts, do you fish offshore, or in the bay? Just wondering.

what color braid is best for offshore? What about brand? Take a look at Jerry Brown Spectra - 130lb in Green There are lots of shops that sell it: Jerry BrownI have Power Pro on 3 reels, mono on 9-10 reels, and JB on one. In due time, all of mine will be switched to Jerry Brown. Cheers, tp

Land pirate, I see you do a lot of posts, do you fish offshore, or in the bay? Just wondering. Yes I prefer offshore/nearshore but when conditions are too snotty I'll fish the bay and/or surf. Generally, I catch as many or more trout/reds in the surf than most guys I know catch in bays. And I don't have to launch a boat, burn gas or buy bait. Nor do I have to contend with mess at the ramps. I don't like to fish off of piers because of the crowds. And I don't generally soak bait either. I prefer artificials.

I just got done spooling my new offshore set up with power pro 80# green braid. I am quite impressed with it thus far. Just need to figure out what knots to tie.

Boom, Look in the package. There should be some literature that has the best knots to use.

Nope the guy that spooled my reel must have thrown it in the trash. I went to their web site and got some answers. Looks like I can still use the palomar knot so I am happy.
I am a red neck after all so (K.I.S.S.) Keep It Simple Stupid! LOL
Knots are not my thing for sure. LOL Hopefully this wind will die down and my boat will be done this week with the warranty repairs so I can hit the gulf next weekend. I am anxious to get out there and catch the big stuff.

I use Spectra, white and 40# I saw this first used in Ixatapa on big spinners being cast from the boat close to the waves breaking on shore. Caught many 25 to 50 lb Rooster fish. I use it on a Shimano 4500 Bait runner and caught fish up to 85 lb. I tie my coastloc snap on with a modified palamar. I double the end of the line to where I have a loop 6 to 8 inches long, then tie a granny knot only go through the granny at least twice, wet the granny and pull tight-cut off the tag end. Take the loop end and put through the eye of the coastloc and tie a grany loose like a regular palamar then put the loop over the swivle, wet the loose knot and pull tight just like the palamar. Put on a 36" florocarbon leader and you are ready to fish
May your seas be flat and your bite the best ever

Just remember to put some mono backing on the spool first so the braid don't slip. Atleast that's what's recommended. I run straight 65# Powerr-Pro braid on my Abu 6500 and it works great. I have 40# mono on all of my 4/0 & 6/0 Penns & Shimano reels though. Remember you try to thumb your spool with braid it will probably only take once to break that habit lol. Rob
One of these days I'm going to Land the BIG ONE!!
