Had a guest in from Houston this weekend and decide to go chase crappie at Ray Bob as my trials and tribulations there have been paying off. We caught 50+ crappie caught with 31 keepers and a boatload of sandbass. By the end of the day my fishing bud was cussin' sandies like a crappie elitist pro. All fish were caught in deep timber. Gotta say that a 8-9' foot rod is the shiznit doing this kind of fishing. The ability to fish more area once you have clamped on the tree and then to be able to lift the fish out makes them a necessity in my boat. I am using the Wally Marshall 9' IM8 in with 6lb Hi-Vis line with a weighted rod balance on the butt. I just wish ther was more than 1-2 fish per tree. We've been fishing some beautiful timber/structure but haven't pulled more than 5 keepers from an individual tree. Anybody doing any better per tree?

Day 2 found us fishing Sunday afternoon after an unproductive morning to Tawakoni for stripers Ended up with 30+ crappie with 15 keepers. I managed to land a 2.03 on a jig that was weighed after sitting in a cooler all day as my scale in the boat was broke. She measured 16.5." Anybody have any idea how much a crappie would lose after 8-10 hours in a cooler......

Same thing here on Roberts,3-5 or so fish per tree with 1 or 2 keepers. The good thing is that they are hitting on the first 2 or three drops so I am only spending about 15min. per tree.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Those are some nice looking crappie. If you only catch one on every tree you only have to fish 25 trees and you have your limit. thumb

I found the same thing - 1 or 2 per tree, if I get 4 or 5 on a tree that's a bonus. I just move quicker when the trees aren't holding as many.

Any time you catch 50 fish that's an outstanding day as far as I'm concerned. - You guys done real good !!

Yep, that's been the ticket for me too. Pull up to a tree, catch one fish, maybe 2. At the most 5.

If I don't get a bite within 2 minutes after pulling up, or even after catching one, I move.

I know this has been discussed before but I'm just wondering how you guys zero in on the right depth and color for the day?

That's a great picture of the slab and the 10.25 fish.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

I've never seen any color produce like white/chart on RR. I have caught them on several colors but nothing seems to outproduce that color.

Start at 10' and drop down 2' at a time. You will find out real quick what depth they are at.

There are trees that will put out 10-20 keepers at times. Seen it many times but more often 2-3 keepers are the norm.
