What are the little kicker motors on some boats used for?

Some people use them for trolling, some use them in case the main motor won't start or run for some reason.
Put the plug in.

Yep was in Oregon last June and being a boat mechanic, it made my mouth water seeing every boat with 2 outboard motors. They use the kicker for trolling on the rivers.
