what about alfalfa pellets in a burlap bag or bucket with holes drilled in it tied to big brick

That sounds like a good idea! Those are pretty heavy. The deer may like that alfalfa bale better than the crappie anyway.

I sank one about 40 years ago. Never tried it again. I agree with Guy, sink some brush.

One thing is SURE about alfalfa, whether it's a bale or pellets....you will attrach every carp in that part of the lake to it.

I have never had alfalfa hay attract carp. But you do need to set it with some structure. Sink some brush first and then sink the hay in it.

I helped one of my neighbors sink a couple bales by his dock last month. It took 4 cinder blocks per bale. Not worth the trouble and expense. +1 on the brush instead.
