What's Texas law say about killing turtles when you catch 'em? I believe alligator snappers are protected but is it legal to kill the other species (or do you just cut the line as close as possible to the mouth) ?

In my younger years I would cut the heads off. But now days I either remove the hook and let it go back or just cut the line and let it go back.

I've always heard turtle stew is great stuff. I hooked a big turtle about a month ago. I got some long pliers, and with the same care you would use to defuse a teller mine, I got the hook out, and watched him skedaddle back to the water.

hooks are cheap enough just cut the line if it's too deep quick and easy and painless unless you would be willing to post a pic with a turtle latched onto your finger

I never ate turtle but after seeing some of the recipes here I might just give it a try. I heard they move around a lot when they're cookin'. Is that true?

I just watch them slide off the logs and splash in the water. The snapping turtles I leave to them selves

I cut the line. I have no interest in a turtle latching on to my finger(s).

Soft shell Turtles are great eating! Find a China Restaurant that will fix them for you. Call after you catch one and take them in alive. Give the chefs time to do their thing and it is a great adventure. I ate them in China and it was a real hoot!
Catchem early!
