Hello folks :-) We currently live on the east coast, near DC. I fish the Chesapeake bay primarily, with some offshore trips here and there. Wife possibly wants to move to the Sugarland area. We lived in Beaumont for a few years, and the wife really likes Texas. Me, I prefer the southeast coast. Anyways, I've got a 23' Trophy walk around. I'd love to hear a rundown on the saltwater fishing in the area, and of course, any and all good/bad info on living in the Houston suburbs. Escaping winter would be a plus in my book. Thanks, Jason

Hi, Jason - Welcome to the Forum - you'll get a LOT of useful information here. I moved to the Dallas area 30 years ago from the NYC area and have never looked back. That boat would look a LOT better with grass around it year-'round......
The locals from the Houston area will be able to give you more information on specifics, just wanted to be the first to welcome you......

Sugar Land is nice.. In fact it's a really nice area. Plus you are right in the middle of Galveston/Freeport which is a HUGE bonus IMO..

Jason- I am new to this site and have fished out of Freeport for 12 years, lived in Houston 16 months, 12 years back. The more distance you put from down town Houston to where you live, the better. Sugarland is a good are to live in. Freeport fishing is a little congested on weekends and holidays and it is also very good. If you like action the King Mak fishing this time of year is over the top. Cobia, black tip shark, dolphin, are easy to run across. The larger snapper are there but usually it is pretty easy to catch your limit on legal snapper. Lots of artificial reefs within 50 miles and rigs, wrecks and under water structure everywhere. All you need is your boat, equipment, live and dead bait with a little chum to have a great day Take care Ken S
May your seas be flat and your bite the best ever

Ken,
That sounds good :-) Crowds are everywhere anymore. You should see trophy striper season off Virginia beach in the winter ;-)
How is the season down there, do you guys offshore fish year round?

I have been in Sugarland since 1973 and it has gotten HUGE, more and more people are moving south of Sugarland Richmond/Rosenberg and Needville, Fishing is great all year round since we only have about 1 month of real winter, Good luck and hope to see you on the water

Jason, I moved to Sugar Land amost 1 year ago from West Virginia. While it's totally different i've gotten accustomed to this style of fishing. It's definitely different but awesome. Sugarland is a very nice area and it's def sweet in the winter having 70degree days (although i miss the snow)...anyways if you come down here and wanna go fishing sometime just give me a shout on here! Otherwise hope everything with the move goes well for ya!

You'll be required to stop by my office on your way and surrender your boat. We don't allow east coast boats in the Gulf of Mexico.

Another vote for Sugar Land/Richmond/Rosenberg area. Close enough to Houston to make the $$$ to support my weekend fishing habit. One hour away from Galveston or Freeport, take your pick. But like Mike said, any east coast boats must be tested by the locals first.

Welcome to the forum. I have many friends who live down in the Sugarland area...it is a great part of town. Don't eliminate the north side of Houston from your list. There are several great areas on the north side that are very appealing. I live on the north side of town and go down to the island, San Luis Pass, and the bay system often. Additionally, being on the north side puts you near to many fresh water fishing spots if you are into freshwater.
From the looks of your boat, you could definately get into some action down off the island. The thing I like most about our area is that you don't have to rely on your boat anytime time you want to fish. There is good pier fishing (albeit less than prior to the hurricane), you can wade the bays/flats, kayak, and fish the surf. Had an amazing day down near San Luis Pass at the end of June....specs, reds, lady fish (a fun catch), and three sharks. A lot of fun. The fishing never stops down here.
Best of luck with your potential relocation and tight lines!

Thanks :-) We're definitely not locked into a specific area. Once we get the wheels turning, we'll head that way on an exploratory trip.
