suppose you're looking at a 1989 mercury motor, 150HP, xr4 series. i checked the nada guide which said this was about a $900 motor...
but this particular motor was rebuilt in 2001. what would be its value right now, taking into account the fact that it was rebuilt at that time?
any ballparks/guesses would be welcome. (or how much you'd pay for it).
thanks...

A rebuild 8 years ago does not add value in my opinion. I would say maybe $900. Maybe more if it was in good shape and had low hours and less if it is not. NADA is generally higher than retail.

I would have to agree. I have never paid anywhere near NADA for cars or boats. A rebuild might bring the value closer to the NADA.
When it comes down to it, its worth what the guy will take for it. Start at $700 and let it go from there.

$6-800 would be about it. It is 20 years old no matter how you slice it. The motor was rebuilt, but were the other components like the lower unit, trim, etc....

I do not agree on any NADA pricing. I feel that NADA gives the buyer a reference as to the value of a boat or motor. But in all reality not a true value. A reman engine that is clean, well taken care of, not saltwaterized is worth waaaaay more than $800. To me a $800 engine is wore the heck out, will make you thru the season and then needs to be turned into 16cents a lb scrap metal or it's mounted on the back of a rotten hull and the owner does not want to mess with it.....

i completely agree with Mike.
and it really depends on who did the rebuild. standard engines that were rebuilt by a certified tech??? throw the book away. and do the research on what parts were used, etc. that mota could be worth as much as 2500 now, maybe more?? on racing engines, like the 2.5 drag mota's and pro max engines, if someone like Jay Smith or Paul Nichols did it, then those motors are worth ALOT more than the nada hits em at!!!
Like Mike said the nada is just a reference, they don't buy the boats and motors.
heck, the lower unit alone is worth 800.00, or close to it. if it's in good shape.

Any good clean 150 or higher V6 Mercury is worth $2000-$2500. Just because they are so popular and easy to work on.
