Although I am sure that there are some valid reasons for moving away from that model, I find it appealing to have a "big" boat to go back to for some relaxing and cooling down before reembarking as opposed to what I see nowadays, going out all day in a small open boat with no respite at all.

I am such a cynic!

that is likely one of the reasons for sure. I just like the idea of being able to call timeout and sit in the shade and sip a beverage before heading back out.

That's some great, great video. It was interesting to me to see their techniques and equipment and how much some things have changed and others haven't.
I was very surprised, shocked, to see them use a landing net on that first fish. He said something I didn't understand about being sure to net that fish. The second fish was landed the standard way they are today.
You'll never see a boat poled from the bow by a guide like that one was. That perhaps was the most notable change of techniques, IMO. Also, the fly was much larger and "fuller" than today's bonefish flys.
With todays flats boats and engines, the need for a "crew" boat just isn't there. You are just minutes from a cool one and shade.
One thing that hasn't changed and never will was his statement that "bonefish are pound-for-pound the best fighting fish in the world".
Great video and my thanks, Robin, for the chance to see it.

That was great, we were on those flats jsut a month ago, and I will tell you its not as easy as he makes it look. We only threw at 3 little groups of fish and only had one actually come close to a hook up. The beautiful thing about the keys is the diversity of species, we had more fun chasing tarpon, reds, and snook. They all seemed much more responsive towards a fly. Not getting a bone just made me want to go back even more.

redraiderfisher,
You might want to consider a trip to Mexico and/or the Bahamas.
The bonefish on those flats in Florida as shown are notorious for being extremely shy and fly adverse. That video was made long before those flats were "discovered" by the general fly fishing community.
You are absolutely correct that those bones now on those flats are extremely difficult to catch. They receive so much pressure over the years that they are very difficult to catch on the fly.
Places in Mexico and Bahamas are not nearly so pressured and the bones there will readily take a fly.
I hope you try again and get to experience the thrill of a bonefish inhaling your fly and turning your reel into a screaming smoking piece of metal....nothing like it in the world of fly fishing.

I know in Belize in the late summer and fall when the Tarpon are migrating, many of the lodges take "mother ships" out to specific locations and then they take the smaller boats with them. This makes the run shorter to the tarpon grounds and you can get there a lot sooner.
