Or you can try Craig's list.

I'm thinking of getting the Pelican Castaway 116 ($380) at academy as soon I get some $$$. I have seen the reviews and for a basic kayak, it serves the purpose.

Pretty much everyone will tell you not to get the Castaway 116, but I just got one... I could not stay away from the price... this is my first kayak and the first time to ever row one... I will not use it a ton, so for the price it serves its purpose perfectly... plus I loved the layout of it, the style of it, and everything else... So I say go for it!!

Hey Whisker, hows the Castaway treating you so far? Have you done any modifications to it or keeping it stock?

I am still undecided on which options and type of craft (pontoon, 2 man boat or kayak). Still leaning a bit more on a kayak, lol!

You can't go wrong with a OK scrambler.

Yep, saw that but so far I have the following choices.
Kayak: Manta Ray Angler 12, Trident Angler 11 or 13.
Pontoon: Tahoe Fisher.
2 man boat: 10' Bass Raider or similar.

Too many options...

You can get an Old Town Vapor angler edition from Academy for $379. The yak has two rod holders and a hatch for storage. Also has knee pads, foot braces, and a comfortable seat. It would be a great boat for anyone paddling under 5 miles or so.

The one at that price would be the Pelican 116. Apparently, there is too much hatred for that one here.

The Manta Ray 12 is a great boat, as is the Trident 11 and 13. I don't think you would be disappointed in any of them.

All of those are good. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the demo days that the local shops have and try a few out. It took me buying three to get the one I like. I love my Cobra Navigator. Kayaks are like most everything else, you get what you pay for. For a first one, I'd buy a used one to see if it's something I want to do or not.

I agree with the post above. Test drive a few yaks before you decide. I guarantee you will decide on something other than the pelican. The classifieds on this site and Texas Kayak Fisherman have MANY good yaks for your price range. Craigslist has a few also.
