I just picked up a package of these at Wal-Mart. Anyone use these? What is your impression of these vs. the regular gold or bronze jig head hooks?

I picked up some red head jig hooks there and am going to make some white body and blue tail jigs to see how patriotic crappie are ! David C.
4 out of 5 voices in my head say call in sick and go fishing !

Well, believe it or not, I have been using red head, red hook jigs for years while crappie fishing. I strung about 100 jigheads on a clothes hanger outside and spray painted them all red. In the process, the hooks were painted also. I would just clean off the hook up to the barb so the paint wouldn't interfere with the hook point penetrating the crappie. Has been working well for me ever since. Not sure if it makes a difference to the crappie but I almost always feel more confident with a red head jig..

But, it isn't near as difficult to get a hook in those 'ol papermouths. So, I'm not as picky about my hooks for crappie.

I think crappie are a very pickey feeder especially on jigs. I have seem times that a person using identical jigs with the exception of a different colored head etc and fishing in the same side of the boat in about the same hole-one would be catching fish the other not. (also seen it where I was not catching much and my wife was and she was using identical jigs). I think there will be times when a red head or red hook or both will be the best there is and at other times wont be worth squat. Go fishing with a variety.
If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, then baffle 'em with B--- S--- !!

The Gamakatsu hooks are sharp!!! The difference can be when you hook them in the top of the mouth, that I've seen results. If they even breathe on it they get hooked. Try them with the red hooks in them from Wal-Mart and they are pretty reasonable. $2.38 for 8 of them I believe and with a $.10 body from BPS, you've only got $0.40 in one if you break off. They also have them with a green head and a green tinted hook.

I fished Rayburn yesterday, Riged tadum. bottom hook was white head, red hook,1/16 Oz. The top was unpint 1/8 oz with gold hook used the same jig body (blue/white with clear tail with silver flaks. All hits were on the bottom jig with red hook, had trouble hooking fish with the small jig.
Changed top to bottom fish shut off. Changed back fish on. Dont know for sure that the color of the hooks or the size made the difference but something did.
If the LORD takes me to it, He will see me through it.

I guess its just a personal thing but I 've made jigs with them (sohumi jig hooks). They ( the red ones) don't seem to be as sharp as Mustad and Eagle Claw hooks. I use mostly the gold or gold plated hooks because crappie fishing often involves snags .... and gold hooks will give sometimes and avoid line breakage.
