I am a newbie and have been fishing mostly for sand bass (with not much luck). I have been taking my nephews and neices along with my brother along these fishing trips. Unfortunately we usually come back empty handed. I tried looking for DVD's that help with locating and catching kittys. Slim pickins. Is the best way to learn this art to just pay a guide service? If so, who would be the best in your opinion? Is there a problem with asking the guide to show us exactly how to use the bait and where to fish? This is knowledge I would love to share with my nephews and neices (and eventually my infant son). I hate seeing their disappointment after a trip.

Thanks in advance for the info,

Joe

I'd start with this first

http://www.catfishing.tv/Main/tips-section/TipsSection.html

Almost all catfish guides I've ever fished with are really good about teaching what to look for and answering questions if asked. Tiny's tips are very good and should really get you started in the right direction. Tell us what lake you are looking to learn and I'm sure you will find a guide. There's lots of really good guides and nice people on this board that will help you out. We all had to learn from someone at one time or another.

Bullseye,

Yes, most guides will give you as much or as little information as you want. Just let them know up front what you want to accomplish.

Give me a call if I can help!

Most catfish guides will take you on what ever kind of fishing trip you want to go on.
I know that I will take folks out and just show them spots that are productive at different times of the year if that is what they want to see.
I can show folks what to look for in the different bodies of water that I fish and what I have learned thru trial and error.
Heck, if someone wanted I will let the write down GPS info on some good structure and spots that have been productive for me. There's SO MUCH productive water in central Texas lakes that it will not hurt my business at all for me to share and I am sure a lot of the guys on here feel the same way.
Good luck

If someone wanted to I can even let them meet up with me when I get to the ramp (one to two hours earlier) and I can show them how and where I get my bait.
What it boils down to is that there's a lot of info that goes into catching fish of any species consistantly. Your best bet would be to use a guide in your local area that you either know or know someone who knows.

Hiring a guide is a GREAT way to not only pick up some good knowledge, but also to learn a new lake. I went on a trip with bobby who guides on lewisville lake because he offers an "instructional" trip. You catch fish, but more importantly the focus was on techniques and why we were doing what we were doing. I have been a fisherman my entire life, but went from bank fishing for 20 some odd years to finaly getting my own boat. It was a whole new world to me once I finaly got out on the water. So thats why I did the instructional trip with him.. This forum, and Tiny's page are EXCELLENT resources on learning, however its always good to learn by doing and actualy watching someone else.
Every guide that I have talked to on this forum is more than happy to teach you how to catch fish. If your up in the dallas area tell Bobby you want to do an instructional trip, well worth the money! bobby's website

If you tell a guide your expectations for a trip, most will do everything in their power to meet them. Things to ask for to help improve your catch rate: yearly patterns, bait options, differences in species, structure to look for, how to read and set up graph, equipment, boat positioning, detecting and maximizing bites, how to land a good fish and anything else you can think of you wonder about when fishing. If a client states what he wants to learn, I write it down so we don't forget anything while on the water and you can always email or call later and ask questions as they come up.
That's what I do and I'm sure most guides do. Good luck!

Thanks for all the great info. I really appreciate it.
About 18 months ago my dad and brothers bought a 1987 skeeter boat. We went out fishing just a handful of times. I wish we could have went out more but dad got really ill (battling cancer). Unfortunately he lost the battle last November.

I took my brother and neice out fishing last Saturday. This was the first time in about 10 months. We have always gone to Ray Roberts to fish for sandys because that is the only place that I kind of know where to fish. We wanted to try fishing for catfish. We live in west Fort Worth and wanted to find a place to fish closer to home. We tried Eagle Mountain (about a 20 minute drive). No luck.

If you were me, which lake would you choose? Would it be Grapevine, Eagle Mountain or Lewisville. Which ramp would you launch from? Either one of these lakes would be closer than Ray Roberts. We would love to catch blues and channels.

As far as picking a guide service, all you guys seem so nice and informative. I hope to use a guide service soon.

I cant tell you which lake would be better, I have read numerous posts about Eagle Mountain, and Lewisville. +1 about talking to Bobby on Lewisville, and if you are leaning toward E.M. for sure get a hold of Brother Terry.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Joe,
Feel free to give me a call to discuss a trip on either Lewisville or Grapevine. My instructional trips are quite popular with foks in your same situation. Quite a few guys on the TFF have fished with me and are now doing quite well on their own. There's no substitue for hands-on learning and seeing it all come together with your own eyes. You'd really be amazed on how much you can learn in just a few hours on the water.

Thanks,
Bobby

Eagle Mountain is a good lake and is very productive right now.

Are you the guy that called me yesterday?

You really can not go wrong with the guys in your area that are on here.
Bobby always has good catches and great reports. I have heard nothing but good things about TXCATFISHGUIDE either. Brother Terry is a really great guy and guides on EM.
Just as it has been said in several posts, Guiding is all about customer service. The guides that can not work with folks are the ones that will not be around that long.

TxCatfishGuide,

Yeah that was me. I called you Saturday night. That is the day I got back from EM Lake. I was asking about your jug lines. That reminds me, is juglining a good option for me or should I stick with rod and reel?

you can learn more on one guided trip with these guys than you will learn on your own in 5yrs and have a lot of fun doing it. dont be shy about taking kids on a guided trip either i think the some of these guides would rather take kids than adults they will have a good experience that will last a lifetime.
