So I have a 14' Jon Boat that I am getting ready to take out once the motor is up to go and once i get my title and paper work ready. The question I have is what items do I need to HAVE on the boat in order to be legal out on the water. I know that there must be a PFD for every person on the boat, but what else do I need to avoid a ticket, and be safe in the water?

Fire extinguiser, throw bouy, front and back running lights, a horn and your boat registration. Also a good idea (though not law)and to carry an anchor,a tow rope of some sort, jumper cables and signal flares. Just go here and read in case I fogot something. www.tpwd.state.tx.us

You will need the PFD's, a signaling device (i.e. whistle or air horn), paddle, fire extinguisher, throw cushion and the registration card. A lot of peope forget the registration card and get a ticket for it. So be sure to have it.

Is the registration card the same as the title to the boat? Or is it a seperate document?

I thought you only need a fire extinguisher if you have a closed compartment that you store gas in?

Also, the website said you need to have a bright light that is visible from sun up to sun down? Is that really something that would give you a ticket?

Also, the website said you need to have a bright light that is visible from sun up to sun down? Is that really something that would give you a ticket? Absolutely. If your moored/anchored, you must have a white light illuminated that is visible for 360 degrees. this goes on your stern. If you are underway, you must have your red/green navigation lights on the bow illuminated, as well. If you're only on private ponds/lakes, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're on a public lake at night you better follow the law. If not, you will at some point receive a citation from a Game Warden, at the very least. At worst, you could easily lose your life or cost someone else theirs. Oh, and your registration card comes from TPWD when you register your boat. You have to renew this registration (taxes) every year, just like on a car. The title is different altogther and verifies ownership.

Walmart, Academy, BassPro, West Marine or similar boat accessory dealer. Seems like I remember your new boat being a jon. They make portable/clamp on bow and stern lights that are battery powered.
I think they're about $25-$30.

That is sufficient for the bow (front) of your boat. You still need a white light on a pole in the rear that can be seen for 360 degrees (not blocked from the motor or some other obstruction on the boat).

i didn't know you had to have a throw cushion, or extinguiser...is that for small boats too, like his jon boat? My boat is 13' and never been asked for either of those at the lake.

You are correct, on the throw cushion or a fire extinguisher if your boat is under 16', not being used for hire and does not have any closed compartment where gasoline is stored. I didn't read chart's. post well enough. He said what did he HAVE to have to be legal. I added a few items he should (IMO) have to stay SAFE on the water. Again, its all right here www.tpwd.state.tx.us

So, the only light that is required for, normal day time fishing, would be the navigational lights? (Red and green)
