Most of the lights say set them about one foot down under the water. Fish may take a while to show up and the shad should show up pretty good withing an hour or so. It's hard to tell you how long the fish will take though as I have had them show up pretty fast and I have had them take a few hours, but I would say at least an hour.
Fish the depth you get bit at and I am not being a smart A about that. Just keep up with how deep you are fishing and change depths until you get some to hit. Usually for me it is most of the time like 12' down, but at times maybe even 18' or 20' down. Not an exact thing ever, but once you catch one make sure to know how deep you were so you can duplicate that.
Good Luck,

With these lights, what kind of battery are ya'll using? I've read not to use your cranking battery so do you use your trolling battery? Is it worth buying another deep cycle battery just for the lights?

Just use your tolling battery. If you check you'll find that they will only draw 1 or 2 amps

Also it takes more weight to sink the things than they say on the package. The ones I bought said 8 oz weight will sink. It took two 8 oz weights to take it under water.

To find the depth I usually drop a minnow with a splitshot about 8" up the line all the way to the bottom (unless I happen to be on a brushpile) and then slowly pull it back up counting the cranks till I get a bite. I think this works best because I have always heard the bigger fish are closer to the bottom when using the lights.

A glow jig is great at the edge of the light.

First thing to remember, the light will not draw fish in as some may think. You will need to be in an area already known to hold fish. Next, I like to turn on my lights before the sun goes down. This seems to concentrate the fish sooner. Almost like the sudden blast of light spooks them for a bit. Lastly, I have found the outer perimeter of the light is more productive than having your bait directly in the glow. GOOD LUCK!
