Man I hate cleaning live fish. catfish especially. Ice just makes it a whole lot easier.

The mental picture I have of that is hilarious!! I can't laugh too hard b/c I know I may do it a time or two myself when I get my boat.

All fish are caught and released...some in the water and some in the grease.

I can't say with certainty, but I believe livewells were invented to keep bait alive, and later, for tournament fishing. If you are planning to eat your catch, get the fish on ice asap. Just my opinion.

some people like to keep the fish cold. If its really hot outside and the fish die. probably fresher to keep fish on ice. Not 100% sure though!!!

The longest I have kept mine on ice is overnight so I don't know.

Also, like Bobby says, they are much easier to clean after they have been on ice and you know the meat will be fresh.

I keep a pair of side cutters handy and cut the fins off when I bring 'em in the boat. I do the same whether I'm putting them on ice or in the livewell. I usually cut their gills when I throw them in the livewell so they're dead when I get to the marina (thanks Tiny). They live a long time, so no worry about spoiling. I also occasionally throw a frozen jug of water in the well. No sticking and ready to clean without flopping around. This time of year I usually use an ice chest.

I wouldn't reccomend keeping fish on ice for over
a day, start getting soft. Best to clean within
12 hours...

I know a commercial fisherman who stays out for a week at a time they ice um down (not just on ice) never touch um with a knife. Also an old timer below the dam at navarro mills said he freezes crappie whole didn't clean um till time to eat stays fresher said scales protect from freezer burns (tried this and it works) never tried freezing cats whole tho

Well, I have a tendency to forget to pick up the stringer when i move. I've lost some fish that way. Plus, you don't have to transfer them if they're already in the cooler.
