Went out with Ernest today for the Lewisville seminar. I'm starting from zero - never been crappie fishing before. The man has truckloads of knowledge about the fish and the lake. I tried to not get overwhelmed, and he was really great about pacing out what he showed me. (I'm a teacher and appreciated the quality instruction)
I've been "meaning" to start crappie fishing for a year, just never made it happen. Choosing Earnest for my first introduction was the best thing I could have done. Rather than just go out to his spots and start catching fish, he took time to really show me what he was doing. He covered everything from how to recognize fish and brush on the graph, to the history of the lake (and how that affects the way to fish it), to helping me feel (or see) the bite. This was more than a guided trip, it really was about learning how to fish for crappie.
More than anything, the trip gave me confidence in what to do. He still pulled in 15 fish for every one of mine, but seeing the methods work will give me more confidence when I go out and try on my own. I do think he had the first fish in his pocket though - he just quietly made it appear as soon as he got the jig wet. I got used to seeing fish magically appear all day long.
Thanks Ernest for a great start into what will surely be a long education in crappie fishing.

Ernest took me fishing for my Birthday and I learned numerous things even though we just went out for fun. Ernest is truly a great teacher.

I do think he had the first fish in his pocket though - he just quietly made it appear as soon as he got the jig wet. He can do that all day long. Their trained, like cows coming to a pickup with hay in the back. It would be good just to follow him about 50 yards back and pick up the big ones that can't swim fast enought to keep up with his boat.

"Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning how to fish in the rain."
Great quote, Fillet O' Crappie.
