This video is excellent, and I hope that by watching this video, I might improve my casting. The Joan Wulff video is called The Hand and the Arm. click

Joan Wulff huh... watch and learn if you want to be stuck in the 1800' casting styles... Come on.. She is so far away from being the end all be all when it comes to casting. Her style would not work for Salt casting and Salt guy can tell you that.... 10 and 2... 10 and 2.. My oh my, we don't need the foul language..read the rules!
Open up that casting arc and cast some line woman..

She is good.... I just think her style is dated... I mean there is no reason to be casting the "wulff method" with todays materials. You are just limiting yourself and you equipment.
By increasing your casting arc... not just from "10 to 2" but say on a 90 degree plane from the water and opening up that casting arc say from "9 to 3" with extension of your arm you are allowed to generate more line speed, cast further and usually land the flies just as gentle on the top of the water.
I just get very tired of all the people who are so locked in to one style of casting...
The more you know, and all.

Well I don't remember her saying ten to two. I did find she said something different than what I had heard from before. She said to raise and lower your elbow, and also your wrist does not stay stationary either. I see what you are saying...but what video do you recommend for someone to learn from, that is free on the web, like this one was?

I will add my two cents. By learning the basics one can then move on and learn all different styles and techniques and build on that information. Joan has some useful information that could be developed to grow into one's own personal techniques. Kinda like when we all learned cursive in school but then no one really seems to stick exactly to the way we learned, we morph into our own style of writing.
Maybe not the greatest analogy in the world but it'll do until a better one shows up in my mind.

So, let's see...
1951, before most of the folks on this post were even born.
Joan Wulff, against a field of mostly male competitors, won the National Distance Casting Championship with a cast of 151 feet.
And she and her husband Lee made some of the earliest saltwater casting films ever, with her throwing long distances and landing lots of big bonefish and tarpon.
So she knows how to throw some line.
She also knows how to begin at the beginning and teach a style of casting that works well for accuracy and control, which is more important for catching fish than how far you can throw it out there.
So give your testosterone a rest and listen to what Joan has to say and you might actually learn something.

I loved your thought on this Robin. It brought things into perspective, and I will have to agree with you. Excellent points. I will add my two cents.
