I am too, but how does eagle claw go from making the dullest hooks on the market, to the sharpest, nearly overnight?

I'm thinking they won't be available at Wal-mart.

They could if they wanted to, they're going to be distributed through Eagle Claw who already has their foot in the door there. That might "cheapen the brand name" so they may voluntarily keep them out of there. Who knows. In 12-18 months if no one is buying them you might be able to pick them up on clearance at WM for $1 a pack.

Kinda of hard to make an assumption when all the variables aren't equal. Why did they sharpen the PointMaker?

Mechanically true. Just your terms are little mixed. In theory a hooks penetration capabilities could be determined by the amount of pressure that is generated in relation to the force (or hook set) you are applying. P=F/A. So again in theory if you can apply the same ratio of Force to Surface area you would get the same amount of pressure...no matter the hook. However, there are other factors that are going to effect and limit your gross force production (rods, line, etc.) So if they could get the hook point surface area smaller than most hooks it could be deemed the sharpest in the world or whatever. It makes me wonder though if there is a trade off between the sharpness and the material's strength. I would be curious to see how long it stays sharp. I'm sure someone can answer that a little better than me. Any materials guys?

The one I burried in the palm of my hand a couple of weeks ago when a tie-down cleet on the dock threw me down with rods and reels in one hand and tackle box in the other.

ps had a tube of oragel that i used to numb it so I could pull the hook back out the same way it went in.

Well so thay are sharper under the microscope thats great!

The real question is how well do they they keep there super sharpness? I bet the first stump,rock you get slightly hungup on or hit the point will be flatend or bent.


Stick with Gama's,Owner or X point. You cant go wrong.

I think folks who look at hooks under a microscope have missed the point of fishing...

That's a good tip. Anyone that has had to remove a buried hook in yourself, will know that's not the time see what you have to to help the task.

Along with sharp hooks and orajel a good pair if wire cutters to cut the hook if you have to push it through. Been there a couple of time.

Last Friday at the I-cast show I had an opportunity to visit quite exstensivly with Mike McGill, whose grandfather started Eagle Claw 40 years ago, regarding their new hooks; Trokar. The amount of R&D is quite astonishing. Long story short, the hooks are dangerously sharp and should not be used carelessly!!! When he said "no hook set required" I simply laughed out load until he let me hold one. The price point appears to represent the high cost of making them so sharp.

Not that other hooks wouldn't do the job, it's simply that some do it better then others.

Also, along these same lines. Their parent company, Wright & McGill, are the manufactues of Skeet Reese's new line of fishing rods. I also had the opportunity to look through the whole series and was VERY impressed with the craftmanship and feel of the rods. Anyone familiar with a "highend feel" will be impressed as well. Probably the most impresive part was the suggested retail price of only $85-95. They simply said that Skeet was adimit about producing a series of rods that he could use on the trail and that everyone could afford. Needless to say, I was very impressed.
