Hello y'all,

This is my first post on these forums. I'm Lars, 24, have two little girls, work at University of North Texas, live in Denton, and caught the fishing bug real bad a few weeks ago after a canoeing trip on the Brazos with my brothers.

I am determined to catch some catfish around here but have had awful luck so far. I've tried a variety of the local ponds and creek sites (Hickory Creek), as well as a spot off Lake Lewisville, but haven't caught more than a couple tiny inedible ones. Beginning to get discouraged.

A friend is taking me out in his boat on Ray Roberts tomorrow evening after work, and I'm hoping to have better luck. Got some tips on fishing strategies for catching as much edible catfish out there as possible, on a boat?

Any tips on good bank fishing spots and methods for catfish in the Denton area much appreciated, too.

Thanks,
Lars

First check out some rigs. Makes sure you are using the correct size hooks, weights ,etc. What do you use for bait? Remember fish are not to active in the heat of the day and are usually stuck in shallow cover. How deep are you fishing? If you want it really simple you could try a catfish farm. Check Tinys threads , dont think you will be able to read all the info between today and tomorrow but there is a lot of helpful info.

Thanks for the reply Tin. I've been reading some of Tiny's site, lots of great info -- I'm gonna try out his floating rig I think. I've been mainly using a rig with a slip sinker for the fishing out of ponds and creeks I've been doing.

I've been using nightcrawlers for bait and getting the most bites that way. I've tried some of the prepared catfish bait but no luck there at all. I was going to get more nightcrawlers and some frozen shad for tomorrow -- any tips?

We are going out there a little bit before dark and probably fishing for a few hours. What sort of spots should I keep my eye out for?

What are the farms in the area? I might take the kiddos out to one sometime.

get you some sureshot bait. you can pick it up in denton. find some coves around westlake park on lewisville with water about 2 to 8 foot deep and you should catch some channel cat. i fish that area 2 or 3 times a week and havent been skunked yet. knock on wood.

Hey Lars, If you work at UNT, talk to Dr. Selby.

He is leaving after this summer but the man catches more trophy cats than anyone I know on RR. He is a professor in the Chemistry building. He's a real nice guy.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out Westlake Park, and see if I can't find a place that sells Sureshot. Only places I know to buy bait right now are Big Jack's in Lewisville, the Cabelah's off 35W and Wal-Mart.

I work in Chilton Hall @ UNT as a Flash Programmer. I'll shoot Dr. Selby an e-mail this week.

I'll take some pics if I catch anything at RR tomorrow.
