My globalmap 100 already has lake maps in it. Not sure what kind of maps you are referring to. Yes, I feel that it is very easy to use. If an Aggie can use it anyone can... ------------------ Duck Jerky Outdoors Website

550, To directly answer your question; the Lowrance GlobalMap 100 will not accept "user installed chips". It comes with a certain memory card and has no provision for installation of any other. But here's the trick. You can go into it and erase all the 'test' and 'example' programs in there, and that will allow you ample room for whatever. I did that to mine and then installed every lake, pond, river and stream in the north Texas, southern Oklahoma area.....and still had room left over, but you can install whatever you want, as the disk has EVERY lake in the U.S. in it. You have to do this using your computer and the disk provided with the GPS. As it happened, my computer is an XP format, so I had to get a 'patch' from Lowrance to make it work; and it worked great. If your computer is like mine, let me know and I will e-mail you the patch. Otherwise, just follow the instructions and you'll have more lake info in there than you can ever use.

That is very helpful. Thank you very much. I don't think I need the patch, but if something comes up, I will let you know.

Is the cable a standard serial cable? If I buy the unit without the CD, can I get the software somewhere else? Thanks.

550: You know the answer to that! Of course it is not! The stuff is not expensive and with the map maker software you make maps of the areas you are in not the whole us. Mine works well, it is, however, like all my electronics something I need to spend a great deal more time learning.

Mark, I am not sure if you were referring to the cable or software.
I can probably make the cable, but I would still need the software.
