I just bought a boat, and the guy i bought it from told me he had the motor sitting in the garage for a couple years. I also looked at the gas tank and there was still fuel in the tank. Just wondering what kind of service would i need in order to get this old motor tuned up? Its a Sears 3.6 Hp Motor. Looks old. How much would getting it cleaned and serviced cost me? Any suggestions will help please!

Chartreusetea,

First dump all that old fuel out of that tank, that will do more harm then good.

In Nac, you have a couple of different options.

There is Nacogdoches Marine on 59 south of Nac, or the repair shop on the Loop on the right as your pass by the RV dealerships.

You might also get intouch with Yam, he is pretty good with motors, and might be able to get you up and running..

Im not really well knowledged in this kind of stuff. So how would i dump out all the old gas? There is one way to put in the gas and that is from the top of the motor. Is there somewere under neath the motor where it all drains out?

www.iboats.com check out that website, they have a forum for outboards. The folks there are most helpful. It isn't hard to work on the motor yourself with iboats to ask questions of when you need help. If I can do it you can do it I am sure.

Put the plug in.

Looks like the carb bowl. If it is leaking, it might be getting too much gas in the bowl because the float is stuck. Find a parts list, post on iboats the model number and locate a carb kit. Rebuild the carb and put an impeller in if it has one. Is it air cooler or water cooled?

Put the plug in.

How do i get the float from sticking? Or where could i find parts for a Sears Outboard motor? and I think it is air cooled. But not sure. how do i check that? Is there a way to fix the float? It came off when we tried cleaning it, and when we assembled it back on it, we were not sure which way it went. Is there a way to tell from the inside if it was just put in correctly?

When I looked a few years ago sears still had the diagrams and sold parts for those motors. Find the model number, should be on the transom bracket and look it up
