Any tips for catching hybrids in boat slips at night under lights?? I have gotten one on a roadrunner fishing for crappie, only to have it straighten the hook. I tried a chrome jigging spoon and freelining a live shad on a 5/0 circle hook tonight, but no luck. I saw them chasing shad, and they would sometimes follow a shiny crappie jig, but no luck.

Smaller hooks! Go to a 1 or 1/0. If they straighten that your drag is too tight.

Cast outside the light and swim the bait through the cone of light. Repeat as necessary.

It ain't easy making it look easy.

go cast net in a different light, and throw shad in the light you want to fish in. i toss in a couple dozen and lightly sqish them so they swim weird. keep the fish there a bit longer and attracts more fish.

Sometimes you have to match your bait to the size shad you see in the lights. If they are feeding on baby shad , they may ignore
a 3-4 in bait.

+1 on matching the size. Under my lights, or more accurate over my light, (underwater light) the thing that seems to work the best are small white crappie jigs which look exactly like the minnows they are feeding on. Very slow retrieve and a slight twitch works the best for me. Also try fishing at the edges of the light source not directly into it.

Ok, awesome. They are feeding on undersize crappie, perch, 2-3" Shad, and glass minnows so I'm thinking maybe try downsizing the hook and loosening the drag a lot on the Shad and maybe try some roadrunners and traps while the livelys soak. Some of these suckers were easily 20"+ and were eating 9" crappie so going too big on the bait shouldn't be a problem... Thanks guys!!!

WELL. Not to be a debbie downer, but none of these ideas worked for me... at least not for hybrids... turns out that big fish I had been seeing was a HUGE bass! He gobbled up that shad like it was candy after I switched to a smaller hook!
