Hey guys, I was looking to buy a boat with a motor from someone, and they dont have a title, they said it will be sold as a parts boat. What do I have to do to get it titled, the boat and motor need work, but are in great shape and i want to fix it up. What do I have to do to get this in my name, is it possible?? Thanks guys.

You can look it up on the TPWD website and see who has title on it. The person on the title has to file for the lost title through TPWD. If you cannot find the original owner it is almost impossible to get a title.

Have the current owner go to TPWD and apply for a lost title.

I would not buy a boat without a title. It would not be worth the time you would have to put in to get one.

but what if you can get the boat for $2-300, nice 17 cc, with a 120 hp motor? It just needs to tuned up and cleaned up, ran last time they used it. They never used it because they bought another boat for offshore. Would it be worth it then?

Jay - I am in total agreement with the other posts. Get the Hull ID, go to the TPWD website and see who the owner of record is. If it is not the seller, run away fast. If it is the seller, you and him go TOGETHER to the nearest TPWD office and file for a lost title. Once he gets the title, then, and only then buy the boat.
If you buy it without a title, only bad things will happen and you will likely never be able to legally use the boat on public waters.
BTW - all of this is true for the outboard as well.
