Rush to the Russian and Kenai River on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

Without a doubt the Russian River and the confluence of Russian and Kenai River is the most heavily fished sockeye stream in Alaska. I was told that each season tens of thousands of anglers will harvest from 60-100,000 reds from this remarkable fishery right next to the road.

Combat Fishing! No doubt the term sends chills down the spines of all those anglers who have experienced this phenomenon. June 2004 was my first time to fish the confluence and as I am here to tell you that I couldnt believe so many fishermen could fish side by side and have a good time and even catch fish. Finally I had enough nerve to jump in with the crowd and start catching fish.

For the most part anglers fishing this area are cordial, friendly and courteous. And most will respect those around them, even helping to land your fish or give you pointers to increase your odds of hooking up. When you hook a fish, just hollow FISH ON and the fisherman around you will pull out and give you room to land your fish. So despite the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds lining the river bank, its more like organized chaos which even provides a lot of entertainment watching the tenderfoots tie into their first 10 pounds of Alaska Dynamite.

After 6 years of fishing in Alaska, I still consider the sockeye salmon the most acrobatic and pound for pound the hardest fighting fish in the statenot to mention the tastiest of the five salmon species found in Alaska. For the past 5 years, my wife and I spent May thru September in Alaska which gave us the opportunity to be with my daughter, son-in-law and 3 grandchildren plus allowing me to fish and catch all 5 species of salmon each year. This year I was only there for 2 weeks since my daughter and grandsons will be spending 4 weeks in Texas but the trip was great and the fishing was outstanding.

I would like to share a few pictures of my 2009 trip.
