A couple of weeks ago the Waco paper had an article about a TPWD study on the best crappie lakes. they rated Mexia as the best lake, in terms of both number and size of fish. I have never seen any other posts on Lake Mexia, and was wondering if anyone else had this opinion.

Never fished it, and never seen reports on it. I'm sure that is about to change ![wink wink](/forums/images/graemlins/default/wink.gif)

What makes a lake "best"? According to TP&W it's the lake with the most fish & best average size.
In my opinion it's the lake with a good population of large CATCHABLE fish and that's easy to fish. Also one that will stay good over a long period of time. (Cedar Ctreek, Palestine, Fork for example)
All the lakes around here have periods of good fishing followed by long periods of poor fishing. (Ray Roberts, Ray hubbard)
Others have good populations of Good fish but due to lack of easily fished cover are viewed as poor. (Grapevine, Lewisville)
Lake Mexia may be the best, I've never seen it, don't even know where it is.
I think most Lakes have good fishing for the few that learn the right patterns and even the BEST lakes will appear poor to the one's that don't.
Does this make any sense? Why am I writing it?

Aguilla is supposed to be good under the bridge, at night. Tried it during the day with minnows, and there's a lot of fish (kept catching bass though). ![eek eek](/forums/images/graemlins/default/eek.gif) also a good collection of white bass. If you have a boat you don't mind banging up, about 1/2 the lake is standing timber. It's a small lake, that few people fish, and the only people out there are out here to fish. (after all, Whitney is only about 10-15 minutes away)

I'm always up for learning a new lake, I guess this will be my new project lake. Now if I could get my dad to remember where that ramp is, we'll be in business.
I've fish Whitney a couple of times, BEAUTIFUL lake, still to this day remember my first striper and smallmouth caught during a tournament. I remember it so well because it was the only (green trash fish) bass tournament I ever won. Was a non-boater and first time on the lake, wow, was that a rush.

I've fished Aguilla a few time during the day and have never done any good. We fished the woods & the bridge but managed only to catch a few very small crappie. Maybe we'll have to try them at night.

I live about 20 miles from Lake Mexia, and yes it's a fantastic crappie lake! It's a small lake on the Navasota River just west of Mexia. The reason you never hear about it is because it's in such a rural area and it gets very little pressure. The only people I know that really fish it very often are locals and they keep a tight lip on their catches. I'm sure the TPWD ranking has to do with surveys and such. It's probably based on a bunch of numbers on paper and not real fishing. But Mexia is a nice little lake.
