It sounds like the only way to update SW on a HDS5x (no card slot) unit is to have a additional HDS unit with a card slot! I have a seperate Low GPS with a card slot, but it's not HDS, wonder if it would work? From Low website:
" Warning: The HDS-5x must be updated over the ethernet network by another HDS unit that has an SD card slot. You must update the HDS unit with the SD card slot before updating the HDS-5x. "
If this is the case, that sux.

As I understand it, the HDS-5R is Sonar only and w/o gps. The software updates are for the HDS-5 and HDS-M units. The software updates are for the gps issues. Contact Lowrance.
