Does BPS let you test cast? can I go staight to the factory? Any advice is needed...

wylie,

here's a little secret about those displays, casting ponds, and such places at fly fishing shows/events: there are usually a few to a bunch of guys and maybe a few gals hanging out there who are very qualified and who would be more than happy to give a free lesson as well as allow you to test drive the equipment. there are 2 reasons why rod companies go to events like this and support them: to promote their products to existing fly anglers AND to promote the sport of fly fishing to NEWCOMERS AND PROSPECTS. and i can safely speak for the owner of TFO that both of those motives are equal to him. so don't ever be shy at a rodmaker's booth or casting pond! if you see lefty krey or gary borger or joan wulff or dave whitlock standing around, walk up and ask them for a lesson! you'll probably be pleasantly shocked and amazed. i know quite a few people who have gotten free lessons from the masters this way at public events. and ONE 30 minute to 1 hour lesson from a good instructor will put you a year ahead of struggling along on your own with books, videos, and buddies who aren't really qualified to teach.

Ken's comments are very true. A few years ago Lefty Kreh was at Tailwaters in Dallas. Taylor made the comment that she had the goal to get her CCI and his response was "let's get a rod, I can help you". He gave her about a 45 minute casting lesson. I was amazed to say the least. Saturday, I got 2 hand casting help from Rick Pope and Nick Curcione. Anytime you see a TFO booth setup, they'll encourage you to cast the rods and they are willing to help with your casting. You can count one thing, the folks that are hanging around a rod display enjoy casting and are willing to help someone new.

As far as where can you test cast a TFO rod? In the Dallas area, I've test cast them at the Ft Worth Cabela's, both Bass Pro shops, and at Tailwaters fly shop in Dallas. Tailwaters is a nice shop and they have some good instructors too. As far as the TFO demo rods, they are usually at the bigger fly fishing events, conclaves, Fly Fish Texas, etc. and I've even seen them at Cabelas before. You can always call or email TFO and ask when and where the demo rods will be available again.

Rex

Thanks for the info I wont hesitate next time.

Let me say this about TFO, I have been to several Texas on the Fly or FLy fiwshh texas events and everytime they are there with rods for lessons and other wise, i am looking in to getting one just because I casted one during a lesson and liked it, they are reasonably priced and as long as they are willing to give thier time and material for the furthering of our sport i will shout from the roof tops the greatness that is TFO.

Lil Bro Mini-Mag

Just had a test drive in my back yard for the latest edition of the TFO Mini-Mag series, a 6-8wt, 8 ft fly rod, rated for 200-300 grain fly lines

The little brother Mini-Mag has the same sweet spot as big bro Mini-Mag, easy loading with a glass butt section and a crisp and accurate delivery with carbon fiber tip section.

Too hot to experiment with up-lines but expect high performance with big flies.

I also have a demo 4/5 7ft Bug Launcher that Ill test in the cool of morning tomorrow.

I have no business affiliation with TFO just a HUGE fan since purchase of one the first fly rods they ever made.

If anyone in the area would like to try either or both fly rods, send a PM.
