Hey Don, when you are fishing those roadrunners in deeper water are you jigging them or do you cast out and reel slowly?

The only way I've fished the roadrunners is casting in shallow water and reeling slowly.

Thanks,

Joey

In deep water like that we would hold it as still as we could. If they didn't bite it that way we would give it a little jig up about 3" or 4" but the wind was move the bout enough that they usally bit it holding it still.
Hope that helps.
If all else fails go fishin

DonB, you are not the only one lighting the crappie up at lavon, My father and I were fishing in water about 3 feet to 10 inches and the action was HOT!!!!!!!!! WE used road runners and the color did not matter. Basically, all you needed to do was find any kind of brush sticking out of the water and they were there, 99% of our bites came from letting the roadrunner fall to the bottom and then just hold it off the bottom. We managed to bring in about 80 fish and only kept 14. (We caught alot of keepers but do do not like to keep more then we can manage to eat) But the fishing is great and im heading back out today for some evening fishing. LATER!

I'd like to go to Lavon this week. Where are they biting, the north end of the lake or just about anywhere? Please e-mail the approximate locations.

ImFishinToday,

If you have waders, put them on and find a flat (1-2 feet deep)with brush stickups in a cove or off a creek channel. Use your long pole (10 feet or so) to dip chartreuse/blue/white jigs into the brush or between multiple tree branch stickups. Friday, I took a friend out and we limited on crappie in less than 3 hours. Saturday, I took another friend out, and we limited in about 4 hours (I had to help him fill his stringer). Church fish fry coming up soon. I'm not sure the color of the jig matters too much right now. I think these shallow fish will last about another two weeks (I hope it's longer). The bass I was catching in these areas have moved on. Catching more female crappie than before. Most have eggs still. North end of lake good, but I haven't been to the south end yet. It's probably good too. Gotta get wet to find out. Happy fishin....

Caught a kayak load of 9.9 inch crappie Sunday @ Lavon. Caught about a dozen big girls. Found them on two brush piles in 13 ft on ledges near shallow water. Used 1/32 ozRoad Runners.
Recipe:
Cast out over the submerged top or side of brush. Click reel in gear. Just keeping slack out. don't reel at all except to raise the Runner over the top of brush, let it sink again. Feel and look for line to do anything, set hook, fillet. laugh

Lavon is hot. Have not had a trip with less than 100 fish in a week. Limits are easy. My dad has never trolled until today. We trolled a 7' flat and kept 39 in a couple hours. WE had 5 that went 9.55# and 10 that weighed almost 17#'s. I've caught 9 fish over 2#'s in this one cove in 2 days. This is as good as it gets on Lavon wink

I guess if you told us where the cove was, you would have to kill us right?

Looks like any style of crappie fishing is doing good right now, I went out last night for about 1 1/2 hours and my friend and i caught about 40 fish. Most were keepers but we threw all them back, i believe in carma, especially when you keep you limit the day before. I hope they last.

My luck is coming by finding any brush by the shore (1 to 4 feet of water). I take my favorite jig and let it sink to the bottom right next or in the brush and then i just slightly hold it off the bottom. i have had my most luck by keeping the jig as still as possible! As for location, well that is a job that is up to you, makes you a better fisherman. GOOD LUCK!!!

Went to Lavon today from noon to 6pm and had 41 keepers. Probably caught over 100, but the action was good from 4ft. to 12ft. all over the lake. Better get it done, while it last.

I told my boss I wouldn't be in today, I got my arm in a cast!!!

OK, if there's an easy way to do somethiing, I'm game.
I think I'll go to Lavon tomorrow and set a Lavon record for Crappie.
There are no records established (or at least reported) for either black or white crappie on a flyrod. All we gotta do is catch ONE that's legal and go through the process. Yeah, it's pretty cheesy, but sounds like fun. smile
