So i hit a few ponds that i used to fish and it seems that all of them now have either "no Fishing" signs or "no tresspassing" signs posted.I really dont agree with these signs being posted,i mean how are some people suppose to fish?I remeber when i was younger you could fish anywhere and noone cared about it.Its too bad it cant be like that anymore.

If more fisherman made sure places weren't trashed up, the owners would likely be more amenable to allowing people to fish.
I'm disgusted with the amount of garbage left at some of the fishing spots, mostly by fellow fisherman.

You might try to find out who the owners are and ask for their permission. Some are ok as long as you ask.

There is a pristine, spring-fed wooded lake that I know of that if you even SPIT in the water bream or bass rush to investigate!

And yes, there is a no tresspassing sign posted. I came upon this lake while hiking to a dove field.

After some inquiry, I finally found a person that "knew" somebody that "knew" who owned the land and was going to intercede for the both of us to get permission to fish this beautiful lake! And a beauty it is! About two acres, old trees grow to the edge with fallen logs angling into the depths where you can just barely make out huge bass and bream!

Anyway, this contact of mine knew a person that rented a farmhouse near the lake. So one bright, beautiful fall morning my friend and I met at the farmhouse with his supposed aquaintance.

Introductions were made and it was revealed that my friend "worked" with the wife of the guy that lived in the farmhouse, not really knowing the guy at all.

Well, it was decided that we would ALL go fishing that beautiful Saturday morning at that pristine lake with the no trespassing signs all around.

We parked boldly at a gravel pit very near the lake and walked straight across a field to the lake. I tied on a Mepps spinner and had two bass of about 3 pounds before the other two were even rigged up! Since we had made plans to have a big fish fry I made up a fish stringer from some old shoelaces I had in my very small tackle box.

During this time the other two guys were pulling fish up on the bank on almost every cast. I got back to fishing and caught several more bass and some huge bream on the Mepps spinner before losing it to a sunken log. We were just getting ready to move on around the lake to some willows about 50 yards or so away when a pickup truck came tearing across a field just to the south of us.

The "friend" of my friend grabbed his gear and started hauling gluteal muscles out of there. My friend did likewise. I just stood there, like a deer caught in headlights.

The pickup guy turned out to be the foreman of the ranch on whose property we were fishing. There was no sign at this time of my friend or his "friend". The forman asked me what I was doing and I told him I was led to believe it was ok to fish there.

He very quickly told me that it was definitely NOT all right to fish there! The fish on the stringer were making a racket and I walked over and proceeded to let them go. The forman told me that I could go and to inform the other two guys that hightailed it out of there that they were not to come on that property again.

I thanked him for being so understanding and proceeded to make my way off the property.

I later found out that the "friend" of my friend DID NOT have any permission to fish on that property but was just a happy go lucky guy that liked to take chances!

It is a wonder that we did not go to jail and have to pay a fine.

Moral of this true story.......Be SURE of who has permission in your fishing party and make sure you know all the details and that what is being said is in fact.....TRUE!

If you see him again, punch him in the throat. Twice. Once for me.

Alot of people seem to think that if a pond is on private property and there's NOT a no trespassing sign, it's okay to fish as long as you don't get caught. Growing up, my father and I had access to MANY private ponds, some decent, some not so decent, some plain AWESOME. We've lost or been denied access to MANY places due to, according to the owner, "If I let one person fish, everyone thinks they can fish." This is just as big of a problem in gaining access to private waters as places getting trashed up is.

To this day though, we have legit access to a few places that VERY few people are allowed to fish, some even marked "no trespassing", due to our reputation for respecting a place both by not trashing it AND by asking permission to go.

Can any of you really blame the private tank owners? If you had your own pond I think you would do the same. We've all seen the banks at the lakes in TX and they are gross. If I had a pond I would only let people I knew on there and you can bet I would have a sign up as well.

The best policy is to do your research first..locate the owner...and simply ask if it would be okay to fish that spot. Secondly, leave the place as it was when you came in. I cant stand seeing garbage left by lazy fishermen.

I'd also like to point out that some of the properties we gained access to, the owner said "Normally I don't let anybody fish, but since you're one of the few who actually had the courtesy to ask, fish all ya want."

Seems like the owner of the property could have some additional liability if he grants permission for someone to come on his/her property, and that fisherman then gets hurt on the property. I think there is liability for the property owner even if he/she didn't invite the person to come on the property, but if there was a lawsuit, I think their liability is going to be considerably less if the fisherman was trespassing.

My observation is that a big percentage of bank fisherman have no respect for private or public property. Same is true for hunters. Hence the "no trespassing" signs come out.

Common sense would dictate that a "no trespssing" "no fishing" "no hunting" "no nothing" sign means just that. Fences mean no trespassing.
The people who own the pristine ponds and lakes full of big bass and bream mean to keep them pristine.
YOU have no right whatsoever to pass a no trespassing sign or to cross a fence without permission. Period.
