I used to have a shad tank which worked great. However, I don't have it anymore. Has anyone ever tried to keep shad alive in a bass boat livewell? What were the results?

dead shad.

The bigger the livewell, the more oval the shape , the cooler
the water, Blah Blah blah....... the better off you will
be,
The best you can hope for in a small livewell is to
keep a couple of dozen shad alive for a couple of hours.

good luck

That is what I thought. It is a chore keeping them alive in a regular shad tank. I was just wondering.

I don't have room in my bass boat for my shad tank. If you keep a limited # of shad and leave the pumps running, they'll do okay for a while.

I have kept shad in my live well for years, you just need to make a couple adjustments. First you need to use a stainless steel screen to keep those rascals from getting in and stopping up your overflow tube, or you will end up with water running over when the pump is on. Second thing is to set your timer on the lowest setting, meaning the shortest time between coming on. Mine starts about every minute to minute and a half. I tried recirculating water - dead shad. Recirculating the water won't filter out the scales that the shad are shedding thus killing them. If it's really hot like now then I will add a frozen gallon jug of water. I have kept shad alive for 6-7 hours before doing this. You will lose some but overall it's pretty successful. Good luck.

yep, a chore.. you can pick up inexpensive shad tanks at academy, they actually work great, and are smaller in size than a normal tank. i used one for years before I bought the real deal thumb

Whenever we catch em we always put them in a five gallon bucket about 1/3 full of water with some rock salt in it. Leave the shad in there for a few minutes and they'll puke up a buch of nasty [censored]. This'll keep the water cleaner after you transfer them to the livewell. If you want to get a good shad tank though, check out Grayline Bait Tanks. They'll take good care of you and have a great product.

I couldn't disagree more. Live shad will almost always work better than dead shad.

You can catch 'em on cut shad, but I always have better luck with feisty ones.

I have a 25 gallon tank I bought from Roger Gray. I belive he sold out to sunshine at lake Texoma and is strictly guiding at Twak now. It is a quality product and keeps shad alive all day with rock salt, keep alive and ice.

I tried it in my live well once and man they made a mess in it and were hard ta get to so i said forget it. I threw tha remaining live ones in a minoow bucket overboard and they did fine. Tha bait tank is tha way ta go. My uncle uses one and its fairly small but works great.
