I like the way you mounted the fly for the photo. Looks like you are growing some nice sized bluegills.

Nice George! Is there a template or directions on the dimensions of the foam strips? They appear to be cut at angles in more than one plane. And I agree with Dale, best of all possible fly displays!

No template Robin, just a good imaginatiion ... Easy to saw from a block of foam or flip-flop - you can secure in hand while you "saw" the hopper body, square head thinning toward tail - top and sides. I use a Sharpie for eyes but can get fancy with doll eyes to make it pretty - the fish don't care. It's a summetime killer - match the hopper hatch for size and color.
No action required - just cast it and let it sit/wiggle.

I caught some huge Greenies yesterday on a tan and yellow foam hopper,in just the manner you described George, it works.
It's more than the catfish would do.

Here is why I LOVE this fly pattern, George:
1. Fish only see the BOTTOM of a hopper, but many patterns waste tons of effort and material on the "fisherman's view" that doesn't matter...except for marketing reasons.
2. Durability. This has got to be one of the most durable flies on a hook.
3. Simple. Nuff said.
4. Unsinkable. It just IS.
5. Effective. I can't see why it wouldn't be.
6. Cheap!

Why use store flip flops when you can go to hobby lobby and get sheets of foam for 50 cents.

Why use store flip flops when you can go to hobby lobby and get sheets of foam for 50 cents. Point well taken. But in this case the flip flops are a much thicker material. One could of course laminate layers of craft foam but I for one am too lazy and take the easy way out by cannibalizing flip flops (or door hanger signs made from same foam0

6. Cheap! Right on Ken – thanks ... George on the big hopper in the middle. what make up the legs... they look rigid. just tried to duplicate this hopper with sheet foam... FULL OF FAIL!
-Top Gear - Ambitious, but rubbish! Sol, I don’t fool with “bent knee” legs except on large hoppers – just plain rubber legs work just as well. Easy to make tho – just tie an overhand knot and it will bend to proper angle. Sheet foam doesn’t work for me unless thick enough to form a head as high as it is wide – square, with tapered top and sides to desired shape of tail. George
