I think minner bucket may have nailed it. Search warmouth, there is a picture in wikipedia- sure looks like what you described, right down to the blue dot on the gill ear.

More than likely a longear or a redbreast sunfish.

Sounds like it is a sunperch. Which is just a little bit different than a regular bluegill perch.

Sounds like a green sunfish. They have big mouths. Bluegills, redbreasts, longears, redears, all have little bitty mouths. Warmouths and green sunnies have big mouths. They'll hit big lures and compete with small bass for available forage. And despite being named "green" sunfish, they can be very colorful.

Would it look like this? Another.... live picture Patterns can vary according to water clarity and other factors. Hybrid bluegill is an excellent choice, especially when the stocking objective includes large bluegill or to provide fishing for young (or older) impatient fishermen. The most popular and successful cross for stocking ponds/lakes is the bluegill male X green sunfish female. These hybrids possess characteristics of fast growth, hybrid vigor and are more aggressive in their feeding habits, which increase their vulnerability to angling. This strain has a larger mouth than true bluegill sunfish and readily consume commercial fish food as their primary diet, which is why they will out-grow true bluegill sunfish; but the difference is slight when not feeding a commercial fish food.
