Shad either cut up or alive make a great bait for larger catfish.
Chicken livers make good bait also. I've found that letting the chicken livers sit out for a while in the sun with garlic sprinkled on it makes for a good bait.
I'm sure more people on this forum are more help than me but this is just my two cents. Hope this helps.

I like to let some small minnows die and get stinky in the sun. I thread those on the hook from mouth to tail then put a live one through the tail at the end. You get reek and action, the best of both worlds! I tear em up at the Brazos this way.

Murphy's Catfish Bait
I've caught more catfish on this stuff than anything else.

If Secret 7 don't catch 'em, they ain't there. However, it can attract a lot of dinks, who suck it off the baitholders. Cut shad has the advantage of size discrimination.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

A couple of summers ago, we were not catching anything on our juglines using shad, live bream, shrimp.beef hearts, and live minnows. My buddy suggested we try weiners that had been soaked overnight in cooking oil and garlic powder. We put them on and dang, we started catching catfish! We did this a couple times during the summer and then, like magic, they stopped biting them. Guess my point is, I think you need to try a variety of baits this time of year.
